SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) ― In a move to bring in more money to local governments, the California State Senate has approved a tax on internet purchases in California.

The so-called "Amazon Tax" targets websites that don't collect sales tax from California buyers. In his video report, Hank Plante discusses the potential hurdles facing the legislation.

The only thing I like living in CA for is all the tracks that are within 4 hours of me. Thunder hill, Infineon, Laguna Seca, Buttonwillow. If you add another few hours, you can be at Irwindale, Fontana, and probably one or two up north.

Agreed. It's too bad, since it is a great State in so many ways.

I wonder if California would even be able to enforce this tax on businesses. Businesses in other States will have to collect taxes from each different state at different rates, etc. Improbable, I think.

Here's a scenario:

A business is located in California. You live in California but are in Vegas for the weekend. You purchase something online and have it shipped to your home. No transaction occurred in California, so Cali collects no tax.

Everyone in California will find someone in another state to make all of their online purchases for them. Then, the transaction will have never taken place in California if the buyer and seller are located in other states. The item gets shipped to California and the end result is the same, no internet tax.

The tax will probably be calculated based on where the item is delivered. That is the way it is usualy done. Cars are taxed where first registered, not where sold.

Technicaly, an online out of state purchase should be reported to the state by the buyer and sales taxes paid on it but government has been lax to chase after and tax those sales in the past. It WILL happen, we just don't know when. Enjoy the free ride for now.

OH WELL!! :(
