WATER IN MUFFLERS

what is up with all the water in the stock mufflers ? every post i read where someone has installed a new system, they report that the stock mufflers were full of water, when they pulled them off.for those of us that are keeping the stock system, what can we do to take care of this problem ? can you drill a hole in the muffler ? or what is your suggestion? if drilling a hole would drain the water, where would you put it ?

On my 2LT/RS I have weep holes near the lowest part of the muffler from the factory. I've also noticed that it does sling water and black soot along with it when I'm driving because I can see the stain on the mufflers.

Condensation is all it is, do not worry about. GM had been putting drain hole in the mufflers for at least 25 years. It keeps them from rusting out.

I think its more than condensation, had mine removed the other day and the water sloshes inside, both in mufflers and resonator and they only have 2500 miles and the car has only seen rain once. sounds like its quite a bit in there.

Any chance you got water in the tailpipes when you were washing your car?

When I still had the stock exhaust, I noticed that any water that I accidentally sprayed on/in/around the tips usually didn't come back out.

This is what I suspect. Mine sounded like there was a gallon of water easy in them sloshing around. WAY to much to be from condensation alone.

perhaps, but it was only washed once by me. Now that I changed out the exhaust, its not an issue

The thing is that the condensation builds up over time, as you probably know it is not from one day.. I'm not sure the weep hole is doing it's job correctly. It should allow the build up to run out. As an earlier post indicated I also see the soot comming out of the weep hole and staining the bottom of the muffler. The hole appears to be in a good location, but I'm wondering if it is collecting in a chamber that does not have a passage that allows the condensation to flow out of it. Would need to see a cutaway of a stock muffler to determine this though.

Anyone out there have pics of a ss muffler cutaway ???(LS3/M6 in my case).

That's what it is. When washing the car the water gets in there and stays. I had my mufflers removed and I had lots of water in mine. A the guy said it was from spraying the car in the tailpipes. Which I wasn't tring too just wanted the soap off.

I had the same issue with the driver side muffler when I went to do the SLP muffler delete. It was full of water (heavy as hell). The weep hole was clogged. I used an ice pick to un-clog it and water came streaming out. The passenger side muffler was just fine.

I would recommend anyone with stock mufflers check to make sure the weep holes are not clogged. With normal condensation, there will alwalys be a small amount of water that comes out of the mufflers.

Don't worry about it! Thats you cats at work converting pollutants to water.
The mufflers already have a weep hole in them.
You exhaust system has a 100k warranty
