Question Ordering vs. Off The Lot?

Hi,

I'm getting close to buying a camaro but I've never bought a new car from a dealership and was wondering what the difference is between placing an order with a dealer compared to just buying a car off the lot?

It seems that whether I buy off the lot or order a custom built camaro, I have to pay $850 for shipping. So aside from no waiting time, is there an incentive to buying off the lot? The dealers seems to be charging MSRP regardless.

Thanks!

MSRP used to be considered the best deal you could find. But now we are 1+ year into Camaro's being built and many dealers (around me at least) have them sitting on the lot. The main benefit to buying off the lot is instant gratification. This morning I passed a suburban Detroit dealer and counted 14 both V6 and SS. If you can't find anything better than MSRP, search these threads for Camaro Scotty, Becky@Rodgers Chevrolet or Anna in Sparta Michigan. You will be surprised at what you can save.

Order and you get the added benefit of watching the process of your Camaro getting built

Another vote for Becky@ Rodgers Chevrolet

Or you can contact me and I'll discount the car on the lot, or on your customer order. Either way, you get a deal.

It depends on what package you want, if your not to picky about what colors and options it maybe easy to find what you want.

Know what you want in options and know what the MSRP and the incentives on the Camaro before going to your dealer.

IMO.. the benefit of ordering is you get the exact car you want, and peace of mind knowing it won't be taken for a test drive by anyone that wants to "check it out". However, the process does have some draw backs. Such as possibly waiting weeks (in some cases months) for the dealer to have allocation for your order. And if you're ready to do the deal now, waiting for the car to arrive can be tough... especially with the weather getting better.

I gave it a try, and the ordering process didn't work well for me personally. I was able to find a 99% match for what I wanted on a dealer lot, and had my car in a few days instead of months. Price-wise, the differance would depend on your location, and I would assume a dealer could be more flexable in price if they have stock sitting on the lot that needs to move. The 2011's aren't that far away, if you don't mind being flexable in what you want, there may be some good deals in the next few months.

Dealers prioritize cars on the lot. They're more willing to discount something that is on the lot than something you order.

Thanks Blur. I suspected that might be the way of it, but could never say for sure.

Thank you all for your input. The cars I've found around me are close but not a 100% what I want.

Frank@Rockmont, thanks, I will contact you! BTW, when is the earliest a person can order a 2011 model?

If I recall correctly, June is the cutoff for '10s. No announcement about when the 11s open up for orders.

I like the idea of ordering your car so that you can have your car built with the options YOU want in it. It's easiest if the dealer has a car that has most important options you want installed then that's going to be the easiest way. My local Chevy Dealer has only been carrying every model except the 1SS. All cars I've seen have been 2SS's there. Meaning when I buy I'll probably have to place an order & have it built the way I want it. Unless one of the rare ABM 2SS's pops up on the used lot for the price of a new 1SS.
