Thumbs down Barack Obama aims to drive gas guzzlers off the road with greener laws

This does not bode well my friends

That is great news... the more laws that prevent "guzzlers" to be built in the future makes my SUV and 2011 SS (in a few months) more rare and valuable!

My glass is 1/2 full my friend!

You think he can't take it off you. He took over the manufacturers...... Keep vigil, we may have to hide them...I gotta get a convertible before they decide not to make them,. Gasoline is going up pretty fast. That is away to kill our cruising..... Yellow, 2LT, SS/RS LOVE IT...... Chevrolet all the way.........CAMARO

First and foremost, Camaro5 is not a politics forum, so please be nice in here so we don't have to close it.

Second, the federal government acts as a large unit. Barak Obama does not do anything alone. For the sake of discussion, avoid placing blame on any one person in government because no one in government did anything alone. This way, I can keep this discussion alive, and we can avoid discussing the politics of this decision. Does that work for everyone?

Third, I'll respond to this topic without closing it. The federal government has raised standards. The reasons for raising standards are politics and and do not belong on this forum. Likewise, implying that someone should be removed from office is politics. The big variable is how GM will manage to make powerful cars with better fuel efficiency. I'm convinced, especially after seeing the LLT, that there is room to improve our V8s as we know them, and these new rules just might give us something we never thought possible: efficient, high-performance engines.

Pretty sure our vehicles would fall under some sort of grandfather clause. I'm not worried. You can take my Camaro when you pry it from my cold dead hands.

I think everyone is reading too much into this. Noone is trying to get rid of the gas guzzling vehicles per se, we just need to make them more efficient which has been possible all along. what's wrong with your tahoe getting 25mpg? It's a good thing for everyone. The standards are an average, it's not that every vehicle they build has to get 35mpg, it's an average for all vehicles built by the co. So if the volt gets 100 mpg, that considerably helps the rest of the fleets average. I'm not a tree hugger, i just think people are misinformed. Thxs

I don't think the cars will be taken away, just that there will be taxes in order to own them. Then of course gas cost as well, like in the 70's and a few years ago. So in the end the only folks that will be able to own 'real' cars are the rich and elite.... :(

I can't wait to see DI V8s that change the game. Plus, cars like the Cruze and Volt will make a huge difference as far as average efficiency. As you said, this has nothing to do with getting rid of cars. It just requires us to make them better.

Do I get a cut if I make that happen?

It is going to be the average mpg across the board. Wonder why GM dropped Hummer like a hot potato? Probably several reasons but increasing cafe standards probably sealed the deal.

It's the future. If he didn't do it someone else would have. Thats why I got my SS because cars like these just wont be around much longer. Some day it will be teslas, hybrids and volts. Oh my. :(

I'm pretty sure the new CAFE standards were signed into law by Bush...
