Did the LSX kill the big block?

So I've just read the LSX (iron small block) can be bored and stroked to reach 511 cubic inches.

I've been dreaming of the COPO ZL1 427 all aluminum big block Anniversary Edition - about 20k

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/11/02/l...oming-from-gm/

Similar motor, ZZ 427 Crate costs half that (iron block)

http://www.jegs.com/i/GM+Performance...66393/10002/-1

Given the scalability of the LSX, is there any reason one would buy a big block, either for cost, weight, power potential, or reliability?

and

What is the cubic inch limit of the LS3 in my car now?
-at least 427

Not sure I can answer your question and what you want to do with the engine but the pics in your post are not LS type motors. Rather, they are old school big block from the past. Look at the water pumps on the front of the motor. Not sure I am answering your question but I do not see the LSX in any of these motors. Not sure of the CI limits of the LSX engine but I have a 440 CI LS-7 motor in my TBSS. Not sure about 510 CI LSX. Maybe I am wrong.

Your LS3 can be made to produce the same power as the big blocks you posted above and still weigh much less. And yes GM LSX block can be made to 500+ cubes but your LS3 block is capable of the 427 mark with a 4.100" crank. A super flat torque curve is the only thing those engines have over yours and that could be duplicated with the right motor combination and/or a supercharger.

LS's makes great street engines but for all out drag racing and power boats the big blocks are here to stay for quite a while. When a 500ci ls can make NHRA prostock power for several runs a year then maybe the tables will turn. IHRA prostock goes up to 815 or 825ci if I remember right. That is huge.

And if you want to talk about boost look at some of the cars in the pump gas drags or pump gas nationals. I am not sure of the name of the race. There are some HUGE displacement big blocks in heavy cars running lots of boost.

They need to come out with a LSX big block!!!

both definitely have their strong & weak points.

personally, if i'm pushin 500cid and runnin high boost, i would trust a big block to hold together much more than an LS.

now when you start looking at special materials, that's a different story. i know a guy who's got a billet aluminum 440ci LS block (actually made by DART, not LSX) that he's gonna run a TVS blower on 18psi, if i remember right.

We were just discussing this over lunch I just came off the dyno with a stock ls3 with a cam and blower that made 735 RWHP on pump gas that's 855 Crank HP on a Production engine.

Tony who works for me and raced with me for over 25 years said He is putting all his big block parts out for the garbage man LOL!

The LS is NOW KING!!!

I agree a 100 percent with you especially in marine applications!!! I wish they would put technology into the big block as they have into the ls motors. But for street cars these motors are powerful i just had my 2010 dyon tuned with a custom ground cam, cia, and headers it made 475 rwhp all for around 2,000 dollars to get that kind of power at the wheels

It has proven that the LSX can handle 2000hp. Sounds like Warren Johnson knew what he was doing when he designed it with GM. Case closed.

LSX ---> Z28 What a awesome foundation GM would be giving us to work with!

i think it all depends on the car you are building, me personally i like retrofitting the ls and lsx small blocks into old muscle cars. but if i was to build something like a 55, 56 or 57 or even an old rat ride i would probably be going with a big block. also if you are restoring the car like it came off the show room floor then you want to go with type of motor the came with so if it came with a big block then you want a big block etc.
