Pinging sound coming from exhaust when I turn car off. Advice Please
Hello all,
I have a L99. I have a Corsa catback and a Vortech V-3 kit installed. When I drive for a short trip, maybe even a few miles, and then turn my car off, my exhaust will ping for up to 20 minutes. This just started happening a few days ago. The Vortech was installed about 10 days ago. Does anyone have any input on what could be causing this repeated pinging sound? I only use good quality 91 octane, my car has over 4,000 miles on it, and I've changed my oil twice already with Mobil 1. |

It goes like this: "ping, waits 2 seconds, ping, waits 1 second, ping, ping, waits 2 seconds, ping." And as more time passes, the pings slow down in frequency.
This just started as my car started driving and shifting like crap. Something is wrong with my car, but I'm not sure what it is. I'm going to get the car looked at next week. When I say my car isn't driving properly, what's happening is, my car just lumbers real bad as the rpms rise and then as it shifts, the car feels like it slows down (like breaks are being applied--they're not obviously). Very strange. Last edited by SonnyakaPig; 04-25-2010 at 04:16 AM. |

I just checked on something kind of interesting. I went outside to my car and when I flicked my fingernail on one of the mufflers it sort of duplicated the pinging sound that I've been describing. It's not an identical sound, but it's close. So if any of you are curious, you can try the fingernail test and kind of get a better idea of the pinging sound that I'm hearing.

Its a property of cooling metal, it contracts. |

I hear you. It makes sense. But if metal needs to cool down and make noise while it does that why didn't the metal on my exhaust make noise when it was cooling down last week? The temperature outside was roughly the same. Driving conditions haven't changed.

There is alot more things at the work in the air than just temperature. Humidity, air pressure.
And it did make noise last week. Maybe a bit less but as the tollerences find themselves it will settle into a routine. Plus sometimes operating conditions change when driving conditions havnt. =p |
