i know its a diesel but still

so i am driving to taco bell on lunch the other day in my 97 Chevy K2500 6.5 Turbo Diesel, and i loose everything, Power steering, power brakes, Tach is reading 0 RPM, battery light is on.
my dumb self says "oh, you are not stalling on me. not here in the suicide lane"
so i rev it just a little. and i hear multiple BANGS. (i read that it is possible to shear the crank on these motors) so i think to myself, "i just destroyed my crank"
call work tell them, i'm going to be late. call a buddy (not going to throw Spike under the bus) but the first buddy doesn't answer, call another buddy. in the end i get towed a little over 3 miles from taco bell to my buddy's place, get the truck in the car port. start pulling everything apart to see if there is any other damage, and HERE IS MY HARMONIC BALANCER sitting in the little gap between my harmonic balancer and my axle.
call work again. tell them the situation they say, "take the rest of the day off, fix the truck"
so i am looking at the crank stub and there is this horrendous gouge, so if any of you have seen my camaro you can probably guess what happened there. new harmonic balancer. new belt, new crank key chuck, J B WELD. new fan clutch, and still looking for a new fan.

THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE MOST EXPENSIVE CUT BACK FROM WORK I HAVE EVERY HAD, so far approx. $400 just to get half a day at work.

haven't got the truck up and running yet. still have about 2 hrs left on the cure check for the j b weld.

well at least i have another vehicle to drive, my '08 Silverado. its a good thing this didn't happen while my '08 was at the fest and i wasn't.

i am still in awe of, how does the harmonic balancer just FALL OFF. really who does this happen to.

the vehicle guru at work said there is a preventative maintenance check for that. you're supposed to check ur harmonic balancer for tightness every so many miles on them, forget how many tho

A lot of the older GM Crank balancer's sucked, we have had vettes that they are coming apart after 30-40k. Or a cool one is when you are on the dyno and it spins off, makes some interesting footwork to get away from. Have seen a guy going down the track and the Balancer separated and took out all kinds of things under the hood. Sucks man I am sorry.

Ummm, JB weld, seriously? What part are you using it on? I have never seen it hold on anything that has a load on it or is spinning. Just sayin', I would be very leery of it....

basically the rubber went bad and it broke free, I have seen it many times. We had customer lose one vertical through everything including the hood, it was nasty. What part are you JB welding?

Well the truck is back up and running like a champ. The JB WELD was used to fill a small gouge on the crank stub. Its not a permenant repair. But it should be ok, since the gouge was mostly cosmetics were it was and the size,
But the main story is the truck is alive again
