Pedderized Camaro Kicks butt at De Anza Auto Cross

Pedderized Camaro Kicks butt at De Anza Auto Cross

For some unknown reason, the new 2010 Camaro is not autocrossed much or at least not yet. This was the first one that I am aware of. We were at the 43rd running of the Duel At De Anza where they ran 300 vehicles like clockwork. With the great help of Custom Alignment in Mt. View, Ca, no stranger to setting up race cars, the Pedders Camaro outperformed the following;
1. All BMWs, which most were M3 from 1997 thru 2009
2. All Nissan 350z's
3. All Mustangs except 1
4. All early model Camaros except one. I will post a picture of it and you will see why.
5. All stock corvettes

ABOUT THE PEDDERIZED CAMARO

1. PEDDERS TRACK II
2. STOCK WHEELS AND TIRES
3. PEDDERS ALIGNMENT FOR STREET, AND NOT TRACK
4. ONLY ENGINE MOD IS A NEW EXHAUST SYSTEM

Here are some pictures:

THE ONLY CAMARO TO BEAT THE PEDDERS CAMARO

ON THE TRACK

Again my special thanks to Rick Cavallino, owner of Cavallino Body Shop in Palo Alto, and Joe Silva of Custom Alignment in Mt. View, Ca.

We learned a huge amount today and have a great start to an exciting autocross agenda.

On a autocross coarse, the limitations of the OE tires is substantial; much more than if you were to run Pedders TrackII on a road coarse.

Guess what is going on this awesome Camaro next?

thanks
mike

Did you run the coilovers? What sways were you runiing? The reason I am asking is the body roll in the last pic. Must of really thrown that car into the corner to get that much roll with the mods. Mind you I am a novice, just trying to learn a little.

And you're on big rims; the other Camaro sho ain't runnin 20" rims. I'm betting with a 19" or 18" rim and some good tires you'd make up the difference between you and those other 2 cars.

Looks like fun.

We are running a Pedders TrackII. Autocrossing is seriously different than road racing. The OE front tires are very much sub par for this kind of event. This autocross what not high speed at all and was very technical. You go into the corner at around 35-40mph and it is nearly a 180 degree turn and was the most challenging corner there. Tons of vehicles lost it here and looped it and went off track.

Here is what the last halve of the corner looks like

The front camber was only at -1.0 degrees, and to be effective on this track, should have been in the -2.5 degrees. But Ric did not want to change the alignment from his aggressive street settings. For this auto cross, we had to soften up the suspension due to the significant limitations on the front OE tires to get them to work better. If we had a larger front tire, the sway bar settings would have been totally different.

Now with our Pedders Camaro, which runs 305s in the front, we have the bar set at full strength and the coil overs at roadrace setting. But with the OE tire, this is too much for the auto cross.

the Pedders Camaro was the only 2010 Camaro there. There were lots of older units there. Doing some surveying, it appears in all the Camaro forums, little to 0 activity exists on auto crossing, and minor activity on tracking. On the extreme, there is massive amounts of drag racing going on.

So for our first time out, after making appropriate changes to the settings, the Camaro did well. The biggest annoyance was the female announcer did not know what it was and called it a Chrysler!

So what should be learned here is the importance of setting up your suspension for your activity you are running in, auto crossing, road racing, and drag racing all should be set up differently for maximum benefit, and tires play a very serious role in your activity.

thanks
mike

With a great set of tires and wheels designed for this activity, and matching the alignment to the activity, we would take off 2-3 seconds off the time easily.

Let me clear the record: The Cavallino Camaro turned a 52.953, one mustang was faster and Mustang was in fact stock according to it's owner. He did have perhaps a better alignment setting and better tires as he runs autocross events regularly. We took our Pedderized Camaro with only a muffler delete in true street stock condition and ran just to see how we could do. Second place isn't half bad and both Scott Fraser & myself were very pleased with the cars performance.

As for the body roll, the car did pick up in the rear as we determined the day prior at a closed event that we needed to soften the rear bar, so at the track I disconnected the link. As we were without all the desired hand tools and being lazy we left the rear bar without it's link.

I can assure anyone this car with a better wheel/tire package, the proper alignment and Scott at the wheel, we would have won the ESP class hands down! Now if Pedders wants a win all they need to do is provide a set of 19 inch wheels and Hoosier tires and the Cavallino Camaro will deliver!

Great job guys! I know those pesky Mustangs with the track pack handle pretty damn well stock. I think with tires you will smoke him.

I have been thinking about getting some Toyo R888 285/35ZR20 fronts 315/30ZR20 rear, might be good for this kind of event.
