V6 burning oil!?

Well i just did my 2nd personal oil change for the camaro(meaning i performed the change myself), and i drained all the old, replace the filter, then refilled the engine up with 6.0 quarts of mobil synthetic 5w-30, and after i did that i filled the old oil into the new oil container, and when i did so, the oil that i drained was lucky if it totaled 3.5-4 quarts total. It was that way this time, and last time it was pretty similar as well.

I did however, notice that when we had all the snow, and i parked her in front of a snow bank, and punched the gas, there were small specks of oil scattered throughout. I expect some oil burn here and there, but isnt almost 3 quarts of oil a bit excessive in roughly 4k miles?
