Tapshift Mod Ideas...

Hi Guys =D

Haven't posted in a while... but I thought of something today, perhaps some of you have already. I was driving to work today... and wanted to play around so I switched to Manual mode/Tapshift drove around... Still love the Car's reaction when you hit the buttons... but thats the problem. IT'S A BUTTON! Now... I love my Camaro to death, but if i had to say I wanted to change ONE thing about the car, it would be to have actual tapshift paddles (did i spell that right? lol). I've been sitting in lots of cars lately... mainly noticed the paddle shifters on the Jaguars, BMWs and other cars. All of them have REAL paddles. They have a real tactile quality to them. And obviously, they look cooler... well at least cooler than our buttons.

So I'm thinking of modding it. Making them into REAL paddles. What do you guys think? Honestly, I wouldn't even know where to start... Materials, Assembly, Molding, etc. I would think I'd have to take off the steering wheel or something @_@. Swaping out the button for some kind of Plastic or metal paddle.

Share your comments and ideas! =D

For autos someone should make something that works like a voice dial on a cell phone and you can just say the gear and it shifts into it.

In my Bmw THE shifters are cool. The one thing I will say about the camaro that really sucks more then the buttons you are talking about. Try shifting going around a turn, downshifting or up shifting and you can't. The button is always in a bad spot. In my BMW I can use the stick that you put the car in drive, you can be using paddle shiFters go into a turn and start shifting from stick. I think Chevy messed up there. It sucks going into coners in sport mode.

I spoke of this some time back with Master Shift. They said they would be willing to see what they can develop. They suggested I pull My wheel and send it off to them. Problem is the AB, they generally don't touch any car with an airbag for liability reasons. Someone could follow up with them, as the larger the potential market appears the more someone may be willing to do the R&D.

If they build one that works the way GM should done it, I will but it regardless of price.

+1, I'd love to see Hurst or B&M come up with a shifter that we could actually shift with, something similar to Dodge's shifter.

I've been trying to contact different people about this mod with no luck. Someone will have to custom fab some.

Sorry, the so called "tap shift" is just another way for the auto to shift. I had it on a C6 Corvette and it was terrible. I had a Pontiac G8 GXP that used the shift lever, and it was terrible.

If you want stick, get a stick. If you want auto get that, but don't think that it will come close to a manual as far as really controlling your shifts and enjoying driving the car.

The biggest mistake I have made in years was ordering the C6 with the paddle shift auto. Would probably still have that car if I had ordered it with the manual.

You may want to contact Steve Chryssos at Twist Machine. He has been doing paddle shifters for years and pioneered the Shrifter.

Uh... sorry not sure where you are going with that comment. I am not asking for my car to perform like the manual. I DON'T want stick.. and I didn't get the Automatic because of the tapshift, so I know it wouldn't be even remotely close to a true stickshift. But since I bought the auto... I may as well make/mod the best of what I have right? I have buttons... I want paddles.. thats all im saying bro.

No, I think they meant a shifter that you can shift with, probably integrated into the tap shift set up.
