Backfiring?

Got my Magnacharger and axle back exhaust installed and a custom tune and am getting some consistent backfires on decelleration, is this common? Its kind of annoying....

Normal dude. We're not talking full-sized, gunfire-esque backfires right? Just popping a bit?

Yeah, more like a crackling/poping... nothing too loud/gunfire-esque

Did they tune the car to run rich?

Not sure if they did intentionally, but the back firing makes me think it is running a bit rich. Again its not that loud like a gun shot, but more of a crackling/poping sound. Just trying to figure out if this is normal for a supercharger, axle back and custom tune. ~520 rwhp on the dyno BTW...

i have some backflow popping after installing my catback that happens on deceleration. I bet its the result from the axleback and not the supercharger. Its there but just a much lower note with the stock exhaust, the new exhaust is just making it louder now.

This is true with exhaust systems that do not muffle the sound as much as the stock. Also, if the tune is rich for S/C, the unburnt gas will create that as well. So, it could be combination of both. However, if it is loud pops, then take it back to the shop to check the fuel system.

There are a couple ways to tune it out. Ask the tuner if they left the decel fuel cutoff still turned on the OE settings. That can be tinkered with as well as decel timing.

The OE setting create such a lean condition on decel there is not enough fuel to support combustion in the chamber. So any little fuel that is there goes out into the exhaust as raw fuel, when it hits oxygen - pop.

I don't have a supercharger, just headers and CAI. Mine pops like that on the OE tuning. On a custom tune where I had the decel fuel cutoff turned off, not a single decel pop. You do lose a little mpgs doing that though, not much maybe a couple.

This +1

Lean condition (afterfiring).

Great info everyone, thanks! I'll see how it goes and if it is too annoying I'll turn the stereo up, and if that doesn't work I'll check into decel fuel cut off setting in the tune.

Thanks again!

Wink It's all good.

Don't sweat the backfiring; it's all part of the way performance cars run.

That is not "backfiring" it is raw fuel burning in the exhaust and ingnition after the compression stroke. That can be tuned out so it won't do that

A Back-fire or backfire is an explosion produced by a running internal combustion engine that occurs in the intake or exhaust system rather than inside the combustion chamber.

Sounds like a backfire to me... regardless, everyone knew what I was talking about so the term seems to fit the issue....
