speeding ticket in another state..
hey people...yeah the title of this thread says it all, unfortunately. I got caught speeding in NY state on my way to niagara falls canada, eh. a state trooper was hiding on I-81 and radar gunned me doing 87 in a 65 zone. tried to talk myself out of it but he didnt budge at all even though he said he loved my car and wish he had one. later i found out that NY state is the highest state that gives out the most speeding tickets yearly. go figure right..
anyways.... im just wondering how this works being that i am from NJ? he gave me the ticket and told me to fill out 'gulity' or 'not guilty' and mail it to the court. the court is suppose to mail me back the ticket....and then what? will i get charged according to NJ traffic laws? can i pay off the court to get rid of the point without driving to the court? any advice or knowledge would be appreciated much. thanks. |

You will pay the court fees and fines in the State and County the ticket was written in, not where you reside...
You might be able to ask for a diversion if your driving record is clean... |

I do not have personal experience with this issue of living in NJ and getting ticket in NY.
I can give you a bit of insight on the NY State Trooper ticket procedures. In MOST cases you need to show up to get any reduction. They usually plea bargain with the actual ticketing officer and they will reduce you to half speed. So if you got a ticket for 20 over, they make it 10. But you pay heafty fines of $100-$300 (in that range) with the court costs either way. In NY State courts you CANNOT buy points down, at least as of my last ticket a few years back. I know NJ has some reciprocation with NY. I found this Website, you may want to call and give it a shot. But it gives some info on your situation: http://www.redlichlaw.com/traffic/ne...g-tickets.html Good Luck!

Just pay it. And when out of state, take your foot off the gas. A few mph over is one thing, but 22 over?? Unless a Decepticon robot was chasing you, you have no excuse. You wanna play, you got to pony up and pay.

Chances are high that it will be reported back and depending on the laws in your state, your license could be suspended. Most states are reciprocal now and they report citations back and forth and then it is up to the home state to take action based on the ticket from another state.
If you have the time or if it is easier to choose an attorney in that area, I would suggest trying to get it reduced or depending on your driver’s history trying to get it reduced to a non moving violation. Driving 22 over is pretty strong so I can understand why he wrote you a ticket but now is the time to try to work to lessen the effect.

You would've only been two miles over in Colo.

Just call a lawyer in that state and have them take care of it. I average 6 tickets a year. I have ZERO points and a State Farm safe driver discount. I've never been to court or a driving school. I just pay the bill when it comes in the mail.

Mine is always $100 plus court costs etc. I swipe my card for $100 up front. I usually get a bill several months later for $75 to $150 and a letter that says everything is groovy and no points. An extra c-note is worth no points.
Good luck. In some states, if you have not received a ticket there in 5 years, you can fill out a form and send them like fifty bucks. I did that in Kansas last year. Call them and ask. |
