Solved my drone problem!

I installed the JBA competition 3" exhaust on my SS. It sounded great, but had a bad drone at 1800 RPM. I searched high and low for a solution and found a reference on a Mustang forum to these: http://www.carchemistry.com/shop/ind...duct_list&c=11

I was skeptical at first, but figured I'd try them before replacing the exhaust (yes, the drone was that bad). To my amazement they worked, they toned down the exhaust just enough to eliminate 90% of the drone. Also, they cut down on the exhaust popping quite a bit.

If you're wrestling with drone, you've got to try those inserts.

They're sold on Summit and Jegs sites too.

Do these inserts go into the exhaut tube? Wouldn't they restrict air flow?

That explains the 90% reduction....

Those are nothing new. They are just baffles and yes they might add some restriction.

Where did you install them in the exhaust? Which part of the pipe? How do they stay put and not slide out or further into the pipe you put them in?

Yes, they go into the exhaust tube and do restrict the exhaust flow. But the restricted flow is minimal and with a 3" exhaust and straight through mufflers I wasn't too worried about it.

I put them in the anterior portion of the mid pipes just before the axle pipes. I tack welded them inside the pipes, but you can pop rivet them in place too.

Wouldn't a couple bullet style mufflers before the main mufflers do the same thing without restricting flow?

Sometimes it's hard to get 'em to think outside the box.

I'm not sure what "KR" is, but it can't be worse than brain splitting drone. Maybe it's just me, but the car seemed to feel stronger with the inserts. A certain level of back pressure is needed. As for your V6, it could have been that the exhaust was already too restrictive. I doubt that's the case for those of us with headers and 3" exhaust pipes.

I'm not sure, but there is not much room near the mid pipes to add anything that has a larger diameter. These inserts come with center caps that allow you to set the level of restriction you want. I used only one cap with a large hole in it, you could omit the caps all together.

Eh, I dislike. Some drone is to be expected and you just gotta get used to it.

How large is the hole in the cap you used? I was thinking of adding resonators to a system I have, but this might look like an easier solution. My system after the LT's has a 3" X and mid pipes, then necks down to 2 1/2 at the rear axle. I could probably put something like that near the end of my 3" section instead of trying to splice in some resonators. I'm getting a little a drone in 6th between 70 and about 82ish mph.
