Custom fiberglass sub box + old skool amp
I was rummaging through the attic and found an old skool Kenwood KAC-719 mono sub amp. It supplies 230Wx1 RMS @ 2 ohms, I think max is 460Wx1 at 2 ohms (no confirmation, though...). It got me thinking. I could build a custom sealed fiberglass box to fit up against the back seat on the driver's side and use this amp plus ?? sub. So far I'm thinking the Infinity 1062W since it's DVC and I could run it at 2 ohms and it seems like a decent match at 275W RMS / 1100W max and it can be had for around $65 shipped. I also considered the Rockford Fosgate P2D410 which is also DVC and can be run @ 2 ohms, and is a slightly better match at 250W RMS and 500W max, but it's also more expensive, running around $95 shipped.
Has anybody built a custom fiberglass box for the Camaro yet? How did it go, and what tips do you have? Any thoughts on the sub choices? I want to do this project on the cheap, but not wind up with junk. From what I can tell the Infinity will hit pretty hard but puts sound quality over SPL (volume). Maybe the RF will hit harder. I also considered an Alpine type R but haven't really looked into it. Own any of these subs? Like 'em? I have a few other components I found in the attic but I don't think they're going to be as good of choices for this. One was a Soundstream D200 II amp which does 240Wx1 @ 4 ohms but lacks a built-in low pass filter. Another is an Alpine 3552 amp which is a good 4/3/2 channel amp, but doesn't have a 1 channel option. I also have a Rockford Fosgate 12" 8 ohm sub, which would be great if paired with another one (which I used to have...) but I'd rather go with a single sub setup, and a smaller driver to minimize the enclosure size. I probably need to put these on ebay/craigslist to help fund the new sub + box materials. It'll be a while before I'm able to do the project, I'm just in the planning/dreaming stage now. |

I did not build my own box.. but I had it build. If it is something you like, I can have one made pretty quick like.

Mold release wax -- I hadn't heard of it. Thanks for the tip!
Looks really good! If you don't mind me asking, how much did it run you? I'd only be looking for one side, and probably a smaller enclosure. I'm hoping to stick it up against the back seat on one side and make as efficient use of that space as possible. I'll probably just mount the amp on the box. Nice touch with the color-matched paint! Mine is RJT, so probably a little more expensive due to the mid coat. |
