18.62 hp increase from just an intake??

Looking at JRE tests of various intakes for the LS3 there isn't anyone coming very close to 18hp increase from a bolt on intake but K&N is claiming a 18.62hp increase?? Wonder if this is legit or just wishful thinking???

When it comes to classic American muscle cars, the Chevy Camaro is on top of many lists. Chevrolet introduced the Camaro in the early 1960's to compete with the well-respected Ford Mustang. In 2002, Camaro sales were down and Chevrolet ceased its production. An all new Camaro has emerged for the 2010 model year bringing style and performance back to the table. Available only as a coupe, the 2010 Chevy Camaro SS is equipped with a powerful 6.2 liter V8 engine.
For those looking for a performance boost, K&N has released an air intake system (63-3074) that is guaranteed to increase horsepower. The 63-3074 was engineered to the specific design of the Camaro's engine compartment and uses only factory holes and mounting points. K&N made installation of this air intake simple by providing written instructions and a detailed installation video that takes you through the process step by step. Installation of the 63-3074 is usually done in 90 minutes or less and only requires common hand tools.

K&N's air intake system 63-3074 uses a non-metallic intake tube and oversized high-flow air filter to replace the restrictive factory intake housing and air filter. A heat shield is standard with this air intake and is designed to allow cooler air to enter your engine. Less restriction and cooler air means more power throughout the rpm range. K&N dyno tested this intake and the results were outstanding. After installation the K&N 63-3074 air intake produced an amazing 344.27 rear wheel horses at 5161 rpm on a 2010 Chevy Camaro SS. This was a net gain of 18.62 horsepower at 5161 rpm.

The 63-3074 comes with a large K&N air filter (RF-1042) that is washable and reusable. This high-flow air filter captures harmful particles and it will perform for up to 100,000 miles before service is required depending on driving conditions. This K&N air intake system, like all other K&N air intakes, is backed by the famous K&N Million Mile Limited Warranty. K&N air intakes can be purchased at most auto parts stores and performance shops. Use the K&N dealer search to find a K&N dealer near you. Find K&N products for any vehicle using the K&N application search on www.knfilters.com.

Vararam claims 35+hp and 3-5 tenth in the 1/4 mile.

So I guess my car should run 12.0 flat because it ran 12.5 without the Vararam.

Most the intakes on the market make around 10 rwhp or so (give or take a few HP).

First rule of buying car parts is, NEVER trust the manufacturer claims. This is the very reason JRE did the first test and why he's doing another one for the CAI's that weren't out yet. If we all went with what the manufacturers claim, we'd all be sporting Vararam's.

The trick a lot of the "big name" air intake manufacturers use is that they test their intakes on an engine stand which gives you a nice number but that is not what it will put to the wheels. A lot of them also claim big numbers and forget to mention that those numbers are only achieved with a tune on top of the intake.

How much for the Vararam CAI?

I've also noticed that those claims are at different points in the powerband. One CAI might make significantly more power than stock at one point in the powerband but the gap narrows quickly. A good CAI is obviously a cheap way to more horsepower but it's not like you are going to get big numbers out of a CAI. It's the combination of CAI and other power adders (typically adding a tune) that make it worth while. There are cars on this forum that have seen 15% to 20% gains in power from CAI, LT Headers, Exhaust and Tune. That is significant considering we aren't talking gains over 200RWHP!

Go look in the forsale section. Several people are switching for one reason or another.

Some are complaining of surging after the install of Vararam. You might want to do a search.
