Picking up Black SS, Any Breakin

Hi guys new to the forum I bought a 2011 Black SS 6 speed tonight I will be picking up the car on Friday after work. Is there any kind of breakin that needs to be followed for the first few thousand miles. Also is there anything I should look out for, it is loaded if that helps as far as option problems. Thanks guys

Floor it as soon as you leave the dealership lot, I did and smoked the tires to.

Enjoy all the dust on it 13 minutes after you wash it.

Purchase "I can't drive 55" CD... Insert into player and burn rubber in the dealer lot while it's cranked up!!!!!!

really guys there is no breakin for the engine? I had a 07 Z06 and the first 1,500 miles you had to drive at set speeds for a certain distance

First...Congrats on your new car!! Get plenty of detailing supplies, because she'll get dirty...I have a black one too...LOL!

I can't offer any info on break in......other than I was told to change the oil at 500 miles.

Wax, lots and lots of wax. and the LS3 does technically have a break in period of 5,000 miles. Though it's not a "drive this speed" kind of break in. It's more along the lines of the engine needs some time to loosen up, get to know all its parts, learn your driving style etc. I don't know if it's been tested but get a dyno right after you pick her up and then again at 6,000 or so and you'll see a surprising difference.

take it easy for the first 500 miles to let the gears in the trans and rend break in..
then drive it the way you want to.

Yes, there is a breakin period for your V8 engine. I have cut/pasted instructions from another older thread that helped me.. But yes, the "drive it like you stole it kinda applies here" - within reason and without downshifting at first. Good Luck.. Lori

Reading some peoples questions and his answers, I think people are making it more complicated then it needs to be. What I'm getting from him is...just floor it! Do hard acceleration runs up to whatever speed you feel comfortable. Slow back down, not letting the engine slow you down (either by shifting to neutral or using D and letting the car upshift automatically) then do it again and repeat. After a bunch of runs, let the engine cool down then do it all over again. Whether you're on city streets and can only accelerate upto the speed limit (or maybe a little over ) or on the highway and can make runs up to 80, or even on a deserted road where you can do whatever you want, the important thing is to load the engine with hard acceleration. There's no magic mph or number of runs that you need to do. Just floor it a bunch of times, letting it cool down every once in awhile. I can tell you, I'm gonna spend a couple hours after I get mine just ripping up and down the highway, getting off every off ramp and going back down the on ramp. Oh and change the oil by 500 miles.

Congrats on the car. Black is beautiful but almost impossible to keep clean. Enjoy...

Congrats, you'll love it i'm sure. On the color, hope you love cleaning it. ;-)

Break-in: it's in the manual and been covered umpteen times on the forums.

I'm probably going to stick pretty close to the manual which states:

Notice: Follow these recommended guidelines during the first 2 414 km/1,500 miles of driving this vehicle. Parts have a break‐in period and performance will be better in the long run.

. For the first 2 414 km/ 1,500 miles:

. Avoid full throttle starts and abrupt stops.

. Do not exceed 4,000 engine rpm.

. Avoid driving at any one constant speed, fast or slow.

. Do not drive above 160 km/h (100 mph).

. Avoid downshifting to brake or slow the vehicle when the engine speed will exceed 4000 RPM.

. Do not let the engine labor. Never lug the engine in high gear at low speeds. With a manual transmission, shift to the next lower gear. This rule applies at all times, not just during the break‐in period.

. Do not participate in racing events, sport driving schools, or similar activities during this break‐in period.

. Check engine oil with every refueling and add if necessary. Oil and fuel consumption may be higher than normal during the first 2 414 km/1,500 miles.
