Need some help deciding on Short Shifter

Well I am trying to decide whether to get a short shifter for my Camaro and am having a hard time weighing the many options that are out there.

I have seen online where people swear that short shifters will damage the syncros and shift forks over time. I don't really see how this is possible if the shifter is designed correctly.

Let me preface by saying that all of vehicles I have owned and driven over the years have had manual trannys but I have never used a short shifter before. So I guess I am not sure what I am missing out on.

It seems like there are two options on Camaro short shifters:

1) MGW which replaces much more than just the shifter assembly itself. These seem like a total replacement option. Update** MGW does not fit the V6.

2) Barton/Hurst/MTI which replace the shaft primarily

I have read many of the threads on the various shifters and the pros and cons of them but without actually getting my hands on one it is tough to make a decision.

So I throw my dillema out there for those of you with much more knowledge on this than I have. I would appreciate your opinions.

Thanks

Personally, I'm a fan of MGW. Don't rest your hand on the shifter (pulling/pushing it inadvertently while it's in gear) and you'll be fine. Some shifters can cause problems if their travel/geometry is poor, but I wouldn't call that common.

I've been researching and looking as well and finally decided on one.
I ruled out Hurst cause I don't see the reasoning in paying 300+ for only a shaft replacement. If you're willing to go that high, might as well go with MGW or MTI.

Well may choices have been narrowed. I called MGW and was informed that their shifter is only for the SS, no love for the V6 apparently. Such a bummer because I was ready to order. :(

I guess Barton is my second choice.

Was thinking short shifter til I saw Hurst prices, and thought - I can get my brake calipers powdercoated for that instead. I'll stick with the stock shifter, for now..

A short throw shifter will NOT damage anything. They are actually easier on the syncros because you loose leverage to achive a shorter throw. But you will feel the syncros more because of this.

And Hurst and Barton actually replace more then the MTI does. The MTI is Just a stick replacement as well but they still use the factory plactic cage. Where as Barton and Hurst make a whole new bearing housing.

After Trying the MGW I could not justify $400 for it. My Friend had it and swore I HAD to get the MGW, I tried it, dont see what the big deal is.
I went with the Barton and abosuletly LOVE it and so does my buddy with the MGW. In the end we both have great shifters but he spent $200 more than me.

Just ordered a Barton shifter, flat and polished handles with old school white ball knob. Thanks for opinions everyone.
