Changing rear end oil and trans oil?

Ok...I know I've seen this addressed before but doing a Search and I come up with a ton of threads on changing engine oil but not rear end oil.

I'm looking to see if anyone has a DYI on changing the rear end oil and/or the trans oil.

I don't know that I'll do the trans oil now but from what I remember someone was recommending changing the rear end oil pretty quick. I'm thinking that I'll use Royal Purple which I'm pretty sure I can get at the local O'Rielly shop. Does anyone know how much oil the rear end holds?

Manual trans V6--1.9 qts.
Manual trans V8--4.2 qts.

Differential V6 auto--.95 qts.
Differential V6 manual and V8 all-- .975 qts base lube + .079 qts friction modifier

Read you need some sort of pump for the tranny fluid or a funnel and long hose.

Am curious what the torque values are for the drain plugs.

Cheers

So I should only need to buy 1 qt of oil for the rear end?

Anyone know if the Royal Purple comes with the friction modifier included in it?

One quart appears to be what you need and yes it has the requisite modifiers in it.

Forget RP even if its free. Go Amsoil. Research the difference

Yeah, I would HIGHLY recommend changing them both around the 1500 mile mark.

I did that with mine, here's the write-up:

Both are a simple drain and fill. I used OEM fluids on my first change. I will most likely use Amsoil the next time I change them out.

RP is fine for the rear end but there is a better option for the M6 transmission. Use Mobil1 Synthetic ATF http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...hetic_ATF.aspx. I tried a couple different trans fluids, including RP, but the Mobil1 made the synchros much smoother.

So...you can use an Auto Trans oil in a manual trans?

Yes, it gets ATF from the factory. GM uses DEXIII ATF (w/additives). The Mobil1 Synthetic ATF I mentioned above is DEXIII. But, Do not use DEXVI in the M6.

I used the Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF that Randy is talking about in my 6 speed manual. This Dexron 3 based synthetic ATF did improve the synchronizer functioning. The tranny is now more smooth going into gear. The factory fluid made the tranny feel like the gears were not meshing well when shifting, especially when cold. Buy 4 quarts.

Get yourself a funnell with about 4 feet of tubing so you can fill the tranny easy from the top of the engine compartment. I bought some clear rubber tubing from the hardware store and it was less than $5.
