So the shop saw issues in the fuel trims to make them think there's a VAC leak, but smoke test doesn't show any such leak.

TOOOOON perhaps?

Test the coil packs. Make sure they're good to go as well as the plug wires. I have always felt this is an ignition related issue. There should be a resistance value for the coil packs that someone can post up for you. You can test them with a multimeter. Same with the wires.

Yup. The other one was right there at the end of the hose. I just cliped it off and reattached. No difference.

I'll hold on to it for now.

It looks pretty clean. I geuss I could take it off. Wouldn't take maybe 30 minutes.

I have a meter. I'll check. But walk me through it.

Is this meter right?

y are you measuring volts and not resistance?

Yeah, that's the meter, but you wanna find the value range the coil pack should be in and measure the resistance.

Anthony had some data earlier, maybe he can look up the coil pack test procedure for ya and post it up.

If you want to test you coils this is the fast way to do it but plz be careful. Remove your spark plug and attach it to the coil you want tested.
Holding the plug wire with insulated pliers, find a spot on the engine that is a good and easily accessible grounding point. Pretty much any exposed metal, including the engine itself, will do. Holding the spark plug wire with your pliers, touch the threaded portion of the spark plug to the grounding point. Have somebody crank the engine with the key, and look for a bright blue spark to jump across the spark plug gap. If you see a nice, bright spark (clearly visible in daylight) your coil is doing its job. Good luck

Also in your service manual should be the resistance rating of the coils

Hmmmmm.......

I remember doing this a long time ago to find a cylinder that was misfiring badly. This one is baaaarely misfiring, it at all. I don't think my eyeball would be able to tell the difference?

How bout I go buy a temperature gun and measure the cylinder temps? I think they are only like 30 dollars.
