Plan B
First let me preface this with, I like muscle cars and want a 400+ RWHP daily driver. This plan is incase the camaro doesn't come into the game with at LEAST the LS3 as the BASE V8. Also keep in mind that YES Mustang GT's are available in my area with under 20k miles for $23,000.00 or less.
So onto the plan. Plan B Used 2005-2007 Mustang GT - Est. $23,000.00 Link Needed Initial Parts – Whipple HO Kit - $5999.00 Link Complete kit, includes upgraded fuel pumps, injectors, boxed tune, intercooler, ect. The mustang 4.6 has been proven to be reliable 45k+ miles on up to 10PSI of boost on the stock bottom end with custom tunes, conservative box tunes are even more safe. The box tune from whipple on a stock mustang gives roughly 415 RWHP/ 390 TQ. More aggressive (and less safe) tunes have yeilded up to 460ish HP with the same kit. EH2O Pump – $345.00 Link This frees up a couple HP, BUT the biggy here is that with an Electrical H2O pump you can continue to drive your car WITH A THROWN BELT(and if you think you will never throw a belt with a supercharger your wrong). This allows you to get home or to a safe place to put on a new belt. ST Motorsports Belt Tensioner – $300.00 Link Uhh, Better tension = less slippage and less chance of a thrown belt. Not really needed at 10PSI, but with boost its better to overbuild and have that insurance instead of underbuilding it. Oil Separator/Catch Can – $96.95 Link Keep that oil from flying up into the blower! Custom Oversized Intercooler Reservoir – $60.00 (materials) More coolant = lower IAT = Safer for your engine, and really if you wanted to you could toss ice into your reservoir and lower your IAT even further for track day. Total Parts Cost - $6800.95 After – misc stuff, exhaust, lower control arms, coilovers, linelock, rear diff locker, wheels, tires, appearance stuff - $ unlimited cost Total Initial Car Cost – $29,800.95

that could turn into a pretty fun ride, how many HP would it put out with all of that?

Yup, sounds about right... BUT:
That Mustang GT is cheap for a reason! -You'll only have a solid axle rear end, and your BETTER spend some money on chassis braces because all that power is going to torque that car into a Blue Pretzel! You're also going to want to spend some cash on suspension upgrades to even ATTEMPT to put that power down. -You're REALLY going to want to upgrade your brakes, since the stock ones just won't haul you down that fast, and with 400hp your definitely going to be going fast! At least better pads and rotors... -With all that extra power you'd better have an upgraded clutch (or torque converter if your name is Sally). -You'd also better have some really good tires all the way around or your going to just make Saudi Smoke all day long... 400lb-ft is no joke. -Yeah, you COULD try and make a 400hp daily driver for the money you have stated, but your STILL going to be sucking 5th Gen dust for the same amount of money. The Camaro V8 will have all of this stuff from the factory because the car is DESIGNED from the get-go as a 400hp performance car... the Mustang is not, and your going to have to spend a LOT of money to get it to the same level of performance. Best of luck! ~LSx

unfortunately....there is no plan 'B' for me.
But I suppose my 'plan A' is more flexible, I don't need 400hp. 'cause the 380 ft/lbs in the other option would do quite nicely.... But - yeah, I like that plan, Diarmadhi (You'd be doing the poor Mustang a favor, giving it the power it deserves)...agreed w/ LSx, though - that might be a shaky ride after a while. |

Uh no, never, The GTO is UGLY and regardless of power it has never appealed to me, just like any other gen camaro. Like i said in the post its low 400's for safe tune, mid 400's for more aggressive tune. But as LSX pointed out it would be incomplete without suspension/wheels and a few other goodies (aluminum drive shaft ect...). It would be driveable, but it would need more to be "civilized".

Yeah, those supercharged SVT cobras are bad ass. Just as fast, if not faster than the Shelby GT500, with IRS and significantly cheaper. One of my big regrets is not looking at one of those more seriously when they were new.

Not interested in that body style, I'm after the new body style(as a backup to the new camaro). If Plan B goes down the toilet, Ill start looking into rebuilding something classic and just stick to my Ram.

My plan B is an '07 'Vette so far. Plan C is to keep my car and buy a crate engine of some type, and rebuild a '69 Maro. Plan D is to buy a 35th anniversary SS and a Deuce Harley.

honestly, by the time you get to the point where you will do this, you might as well spend a few dollars more and get a used GT500... I've seen them going around here for about $36-38k with less than 10,000 miles... by the time the Camaro comes out, you'll be able to get them for less than that... why pay $29k for a regular GT with only 400-450hp when you can get a GT500 with 500hp for a few thousand more? and, to top it off, you'd have a factory warranty with that 500hp
I've already started working on my "plan B" since the Z06 just aint gonna happen... after we get a house built, it will be time to add a few machines to the fleet

One of my plan Bs was the Challenger. But after seeing its bland parts bin interior and 4140 lbs curb weight, I've ditched that plan B.
I think the WRX STI will be a serious contender for me, if for whatever reason the Camaro is priced out of reach, or is a big disappointment, which I doubt it will be. Plan C is a Mustang, if it gets a significant power gain over the current 300 HP. |
