9" or LPE ring and Pinion upgrade?
Im trying to avoid the cost of the 9" conversioin kit. So im trying to find out if I can get away with just a ring and pinion and axle upgrade? I have around 700RWHP and im gonna increase that in the long term future(850-900rwhp maybe). I do like to go to the drag strip and run the car but I dont do any hard launching. Im all ears!

it really depends on how you drive, there are people that can finesse a car off the line and have a great feel for whats going on in the drivetrain. then there are some that feel the car should be able to handle the stress and bring the parts to the extent of there limit. the question is how hard are you on parts (or other cars in the past) and what do you expect out of the car ?
manual cars will be more abusive and autos will make things like this last. what the ultimate goal of the car ? |

Moiy, I'm in the same boat....well kinda. I'm not nearly pushing the HP levels you are...at least not yet. But I seem to have the same addiction to wanting more and more, so maybe someday I'll get there. And I would like to buy a rear end set-up only once (preferably that new 12-bolt Hammerhead set-up)!!! But like you said, that is a lot of cash. I seriously doubt that I will ever have a spare $6000.00 sitting around that I can just dump into a rear end set-up.....at least not without divorce paperwork pending!!! It seems much more financially feasible to me to buy one part at a time (i.e. gears, axles, driveshaft, etc.) and slowly build-up the stock rear end. But I don't want to buy anything that will ultimately be dumped later on due to failure!!! I don't really ever plan on having that 800-1000hp beast, but I don't want to live in constant fear that my drivetrain is going to fail at any moment!!! Oh...what to do, what to do???

IMHO, go with the 9" setup and don't look back. It's not as much on this particular project, but too many times I've wasted money on trying to keep the stock stuff alive only to eventually make the switch to the "bulletproof" setup. In the end, you will spend more money and have had a helluva lot more headaches and down time. Other than Strange's noisy center, I love my 9" setup and DSS's service is second to none.

I did this homework for months talking to owners and collecting opinions from the performance shops. It's just a matter of time. If you are at 700rwhp you may already have bent shaft bolts. You spent the money to have that kind of power, but you can never use it because your car isn't built to handle it?
Honestly if you think you are also going to go for more power in the future you are eventually going to have a failure. You should look into upgrading. Last edited by BackinBlack; 05-30-2012 at 10:45 AM. |

I went with the Gforce engineering 9" kit. I may not have the power right now, but I can now confidently build the horsepower without having to worry about drive train issues in the future. Just bite the bullet and do a 9" kit, what fun is it having all that power and not being able to really use it? That's just wasted money right there.

GFORCE 9" with aluminum DS and dont look back! This setup is so strong that my 715 RWHP could not break it....instead it broke my #5 top ringland trying to break it! We'll see how it stands up to 1000rwhp

M6 you are on borrowed time. It isn't a matter of IF you will blow the rear axle up...it's simply when.

Realize you can extend the life of the OE stuff if you know how to use the clutch and dont add sticky tires! I had my OE stuff on at over 600RWHP for over 5k miles and 700+ rwhp for 2000 miles. When we installed the 9" Gforce we were amazed at how well the clutch held up as well as the axles/driveshaft/diff. And i was not easy on the OE stuff since my plan all along was to go with the 9", but i also was not a buffoon with the car either....at least not till after i iinstalled the 9" The stock internals werent so happy with the buffoonery!
