Will this latest round be the last era of the V8 american muscle cars?
I know that the doomsday predictions of the upcoming CAFE standards is overblown and all but are we maybe looking at a situation like the 70's where this wave of new Camaro, Challenger, and Mustang is going to be the last run of hi-po american muscle?
Are we going to see V6 versions of each of these cars going forward with may more frequent use of forced induction, or will cars like the Camaro and Challenger even possibly die off again :( |

This is going to be the same bullshit as Great Britain. The only guys with 8 cylinders will be the rich. The only V8's available will be low production premium price. I'm going to buy a vert and drive it till the wheels falls off.

Cars will become lighter. Engine displacement will shrink. Yes, there will be more widespread use of turbo systems. NO - The V8 is NOT going to die off, and NO - Performance will NOT go away this time around. This isn't the '70s...it's only a very similar time. Ethanol, electric drive. they had very little (if any) of that back then. And today, people (including the engineers) are much less apt to give up performance this time around.
Don't worry. Things will change - but they're not gonna change for the worse. |

I don't think that we will see round three of the muscle car wars. Odds are, in another 40 years there aren't going to be too many internal combuistion engines around, but then again, there is a good chance that the last gasoline powered ICE's that are mass produced will be OHV chevy small blocks.
But, hydrogen can be burned in a gasoline engine. So I'm sure that just like there are aftermarket parts for cars from the 60's availible today, I'm sure that there will be kits to allow our muscle cars to run on hydrogen for when gas stations disappear. Lastly, even when cars are powered by fuel cells, I'm sure that GM will still offer high power, low cost cars.

The 70s didn't kill off the V8, and look how much more technologically advanced we are now. I think, as Dragon said, that cars and engines will shrink, but performance and V8s will remain. Then again, in the 70s they didn't have a majority of people believing in a ridiculous environmental lie forced on us by the government and their "green" corporate supporters.

Wow, everyone is so civil on this redundant subject. Keep it up guys.
V8's will definitely become more exclusive in the future more so than they are starting to become now. I think you'll see V8's relegated to the most high performance of options across various model lines in the future form here on out. There's a lot of talk of investing in turbocharged 4's and 6's, so I think you'll see a lot of new developments there. Personally, I'm curious to know what the limitations are in making 8's more fuel efficient?? Other weight saving measures will surely yield the biggest improvements as far is efficiency of any kind is concerned for the future.

Here's my take on things as I think they will play out. Anyone with more/better information please feel free to correct me.
The current and soon-to-be generations of V8 power may end (or severly wane) in about seven years as a result of the CAFE standards. However, soon after this decline, a company (like Coskata) will finally figure out a breakthough that will enable relatively cheap, renewable, eco-friendly fuel. This will in turn signal a resurgence in the musclecar wars, and the sixth gen Camaro will still be the baddest car on the block. This may all be wishful thinking because I really want an internal combusion engine (the quiet nature of electric cars disturbs my soul), I would love a renewable domestic energy course to lessen our dependency on foreign oil, and, although I drive (and plan on buying again) a V8 RWD car, I would love a cleaner burning solution. Thoughts? |

the V8 will NEVER die BECAUSE this is north america a big mans, rich mans world, a commercial relativly empty economy and space... and long as there is big commercial trucks carrying around huge loads of stuff... then ther will be cars with those same engines... europe has no space left for building

no... and as long as there is an aftermarket, there will be LS7 powered Solstices and Skys running around, too... I was just talking to the wife last night about the idea of us getting a used base model Sky somewhere down the road and then putting a LS2/T56 combo in it... she laughed.
