Aftermarket back up camera - form and function

I looked around at a lot of backup cameras prior to finding the one I went with. The biggest issue I saw with the cameras that most people installed was that it was either huge or just to obvious. I wanted a camera that had a stock appearance and was as small as possible. I looked around for a while and came across the Crimestopper SV-6818.EM. I picked it up from SonicElectronix for around $40 shipped. Here are some of the pictures I have taken to help others that might want to go with this camera.

Bye Bye backup anxiety!

Kit includes properly sized hole saw - not bad for $40.

Camera is in place.

I had some questions about how well it functions - well, here ya go.

The yellow marker (a level) is 12" from my bumper.
The hammer is 24" from my bumper.
The pipe is 36" from my bumper.

This works out pretty good for me as I don't like getting any closer than 12" to anything when I'm backing up.

I wired the camera power and ground to my rear drivers side tail lamp harness.

The ground is connected to the inboard tail lamp ground wire (black).

The power is connected to main harness. The +12V wire for the back up lamps is the teal wire. I say it's light blue, but my wife says teal....

A couple of views from a little farther out to see locations.

Looks like a good camera. When I saw the spec for it it reads the tilt is not adjustable. By your pictures The angle is pointing to far down for me. Is that mounted to your car?

Thanks for this post. I installed a similar setup in my 1LS. The only difference is that I used a camera/screen/wireless transmitter combo from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Buyee-Inch-Mon...+backup+camera). On the 2015 the reverse light colors are gray (12V+) and black (-).

I have the same camera, and I thought that too when I got it. I like it though. I can just barely see the bottom of my rear bumper (the part that sticks out under the license plate) in the camera. It helps me see exactly how far I can back up without hitting something.

My rear bumper had a cutout where the camera needed to be mounted. I fabricated a mount out of a piece of aluminum. It was a PITA, but it worked.

Thanks, and I agree with your wife. It is teal or green at most.

By the way, how have the rear light connections held? I have heard that those quick splice connectors are not reliable, and in fact can damage wires long term.

Thanks!

What color was the ground wire? My wiring does not have any black wires. I have a light gray, and a wire with a stripe. I tried the wire with the stripe as a ground, no such luck.
