The "drain plug" in the bottom of the pan is actually the fill check plug.
With the engine running, and trans fluid warm to hot, remove that plug, and very little fluid will come out (unless its overfilled or the vehicle is unlevel).
You can fill it through the dipstick hole (where a dipstick should go), until it starts to drain out of the bottom plug, then it is the proper level.

But make sure the transmission temp is between 30-50C (85-125F). If the transmission temp is hotter, then the fluid level will be higher and you'll actually drain out too much fluid. This is the #1 leading cause for underfilled transmissions. You must check it within this temperature window or you will have an underfilled or overfilled transmission.
