Tranny Fluid Levels

Hey Guys

Is it true that ONLY a dealer can check the fluid levels in the A 6?

Anybody out there done it themselves?

Thanks

Here is what the operators manual says
"Automatic Transmission
Fluid
How to Check Automatic
Transmission Fluid
It is not necessary to check
the transmission fluid level.
A transmission fluid leak is the
only reason for fluid loss. If a leak
occurs, take the vehicle to your
dealer service department and have
it repaired as soon as possible.
The vehicle is not equipped with a
transmission fluid level dipstick.
There is a special procedure
for checking and changing the
transmission fluid. Because this
procedure is difficult, this should
be done at the dealer service
department. Contact the dealer
for additional information or the
procedure can be found in the
service manual. To purchase a
service manual, see Service
Publications Ordering Information
on page 13‑15.
Change the fluid and filter at the
intervals listed in Scheduled
Maintenance on page 11‑2, and
be sure to use the fluid listed in
Recommended Fluids and
Lubricants on page 11‑6."

So they want u to take it to gm for checking.

Did some searching and did not find how it is done.

You could install a dipstick. That is what I am going to do.

If you have a lift, or can get it level on 4 jack stands, its doable. (Still a pain though)
The "drain plug" in the bottom of the pan is actually the fill check plug.
With the engine running, and trans fluid warm to hot, remove that plug, and very little fluid will come out (unless its overfilled or the vehicle is unlevel).
You can fill it through the dipstick hole (where a dipstick should go), until it starts to drain out of the bottom plug, then it is the proper level.

But make sure the transmission temp is between 30-50C (85-125F). If the transmission temp is hotter, then the fluid level will be higher and you'll actually drain out too much fluid. This is the #1 leading cause for underfilled transmissions. You must check it within this temperature window or you will have an underfilled or overfilled transmission.
