Just a quick comparison.....
I was reading part of Motor Trend earlier today and noticed something. So, I did a few calculations.....
They are currently "flogging" a Lexus IS-F in their long term fleet. They mention that it weighs in at 3806lbs and has 416HP. It also gives them a 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds. Okay, you all see where I'm going for sure, but follow me..... That gives the Lexus a 9.15lbs/HP rating. From the specs document in the other thread... The SS with the Auto is 3913lbs, 400HP = 9.78lbs/HP The SS with the Manual is 3860lbs, 422HP = 9.15lbs/HP Now, I know gearing and such play a big role in performance (the "little" Lexus uses an 8-spd tranny, so it could have a big gearing advantage), but it stands to reason that the Camaro will be able to put up some solid numbers right off the dealer lot. |

I don't think another two gears will necessarily give it an advantage. Remember, everytime you apply power through higher gear ratios, you actually loose a little bit of power. That, and I think everytime the tranny shifts, there is a delay in power, so it would seem to me, the more gears you have, the more time is spent shifting, which means there is a little less time power is being applied to the ground... Not to mention if GM tunes the converter a little looser, it will be in it's powerband more, and there will be less RPM drop between shifts (it's known as shift extension.)
Regardless, I believe an automatic V8 will be pretty close to those times posted.

I was meaning more that the Lexus could have a much shorter first gear giving it a better launch while still having the much taller high gear for top speed.
Also noticed that the Lexus is rated at 16/23 for mpg with the 8 gears. The AFM apparently offsets those extra gears in that aspect, since the Camaro is supposed to get 23mpg highway. |

I agree, I was just using the Lexus' numbers since they were very current to gage the Camaro's performance. I think we will all be very happy with both the acceleration and mpg numbers.

Yup. There are a few cars out there with similar specs (but not similar price!) that you can use to estimate performance (the main variable being aerodynamics). I've said before, I'm pretty sure GM is underpromising/overdelivering on performance.

camaro will not do 4.3 it at the lowest will do 4.5-4.6. The lexus has an 8speed that is the main advantage.

GM is doing what BMW usually does.
But traction is very very important. The SS manual has launch control. It might help the SS manual 422HP LS3 do 0-60 in 4.5, 1/4 in 12.9. I HOPE SO. I will be very satisfied if the SS/RS manual 422HP Camaro does 4.6 to 60 and a very low 13 1/4 mile. Thats plenty fast IMO. |
