4.10/4.11 Drivability
I'm debating on upgrading my rear-end from stock ratio to 4.11s. I just want to ask those that have already completed this upgrade how they like it? Is first gear completely useless now, or does it feel like it should have been that way from the factory?
Thank you, Brandon |

Is your car a manual or auto? For the manual, 4.11 is about perfect. I'm typing this on my iPhone from Starbucks but when I get to a computer I'll give you some more substantive information.

Also, I'm looking at your site right now adding up all the parts I'm gonig to install on my car when I get home from this deployment. Just to make sure, are the 4.11s the gears that no one has had any trouble with so far?

Yeah, 4.11s have no known issues. I have heard a person state something about the noise. He thinks its from all the solid bushings they put into the drivetrain/suspension that transfered a resonance frequency. I have found a couple people that have the 4.11s with little or no noise at all. Its all about the install and break in from what I have researched.

I upgraded my car to a 9 inch and 3:73 gears. No problems no noise from gears and pretty much bullit proof with the strange heavy duty set up and dss heavy duty axles. only problem was adding a drain port to the 9 inch center section.

Here is a quote from our blog discussing the hard data concerning 4.10 in these cars. You will want to go with the new 4.11 but the numbers are identical to the 4.10.
"When equipped with the manual transmission (M6) the SS comes with a 3.45 rear end and cruises at 1612 RPM at 70 MPH. By upgrading the factory 3.45s in the stock M6 equipped Camaro SS to the 3.73s you will realize an equivalent torque gain of approximately 10% or 42 rear wheel lb.-ft. of torque and cruise at 1750 RPM at 70 MPH. By upgrading the stock M6 equipped Camaro SS to 4.10s you will realize an equivalent torque gain of approximately 20% or 84 rear wheel lb.-ft. of torque and cruise at 1915 RPM at 70 MPH. By upgrading the stock M6 equipped Camaro SS to 4.33s you will realize an equivalent torque gain of approximately 25% or 105 rear wheel lb.-ft. of torque and cruise at 2025 RPM at 70 MPH. We have found that the 4.10s are the ideal gear for most M6 equipped SS street applications. Once the 550-600 rear wheel horsepower range is reached we recommend dialing back to 3.73 unless the vehicle has a very solid suspension package and a very competent driver."
Here are a few quotes from Camaro5 members who have made the swap to 4.10 in their M6 equipped SS. Quote:

I highly recommend 4.10s/4.11s. First gear is definitely not useless, but I can even start in 2nd without much sluggishness.
