Wet Sanding

Hey Guys. Just got a quote yesterday to wet sand the factory "orange peel effect" for $500. Is this a good idea/ price? He also quoted me a price to fix 2 rock chips on the front bumper and paint for $225. Is this a good price as well?

I have seen the painter's work and he does a great job...flawless even. The only thing that concerns me is that sometimes he said that wet sanding could open a can of worms (swirls, etc.). Just wanted to get an idea of what you guys thought.

They all have factory Orange Peel. I have been detailing and color sanding show cars for 30+ years and I will not touch my Black SS. There is not enough clear on the car to not break through. Furthermore if you were to have it done it would be considerly more than $500. Proceed with caution and factor some repaint into your price to be safe.

I don't care what GM or anybody else says about this paint, it's $hit on this car.

I figure most of us that plan on keeping our cars for a long time will need a full repaint at some point. This frickin clear chips or swirls if you look at it wrong.

I'd say live with the orange peel. Wet sanding the whole car is just not something you want to get into.

DO NOT wet sand the car you are asking for nothing but problems by the time you wet sand the clear and buff it out you WILL go right through the paint. trust me i know. i tried a little touch up on the bumper, hit it with 3m triact 3000 grit wet paper then perfect it 3000 compound and went right threw the paint there is not enough material on the car to do this

Thanks guys. I guess I will just deal with it. Sounds like it will end up being more hassle than its worth.

What about the cost of repairing and repainting the bumper? Is the cost in line?

$500 is not a realistic price for a QUALITY wetsand job, especially if he was going to buff it out too. The time/skill involved in doing a good wetsand justify a MUCH higher price than that.

Also, like was mentioned, its factory paint... you don't have a ton of thickness to deal with. I'd learn to live with it IMO, or save up, have it fully repainted and make blocking the paint a part of the process.

I wetsand 5-10 cars a month. I tried a lil on mine and didn't break through but I definitely won't continue. You get what you pay for. I have never wetsanded a car for less than $1500- it's alot of work and theres only one way to do it and that's perfect. I recently did a black Audi S8 for $1800 so you get the idea.
