RPM's when cruising

Just curious what RPM range eveyone keeps the car at when cruising at various speeds. I find sometimes shifting to a lower gear and dropping the RPM's too low makes the car feel a little sluggish. Wondering if I should be keeping the RPM's a little higher.

I usually aim for whatever gear will keep my RPMs around 1800 while cruising. That's about where it is in 6th at 60mph. No point in running a higher RPM when I don't need it (cruising)...that's what downshifting is for (accelerating).

IMHO, keep in mind, the more RPMs at high speeds, the worse your gas milage will be.

Obviously, you do not want to be in 6th gear in a manual if you're doing 30 MPH. This will affect your milage as well. Your power will also be bogged down. I usually keep it in 4th in slow traffic, 25 to 35 MPH.

I'm with him. I keep it right around 1800, so I get optimal gas milage.

I try for around 1500 rpm's. 35 mph +/- in 5th gear and it does not lug.

...I agree with AirmanSal and Wild Bill, I keep it at 2000 RPM when I cruise!

If I'm on the highway and not accelerating I'm in 6th gear. So sometimes I'll be in 6th as low as 55mph.

when the cars rpm's are low and the acceleration feels sluggish I understand at this point it is good for gas miles but does the put strain on engine? I really don't know.

I would downshift if I wanted to accelerate, cruising is one thing, but lets put the engine in a good place to press the gofast pedal so it doesn't lug.

Thanks for all the replies...good info.

Bottom line seems to be keep the RPM's low when cruising and downshift when looking to accelerate.
