painting engine cover questions.

the wife saw a painted engine cover at a show last week and now since i paint houses she wants me to paint hers. i bought the IOM spray paint from the dealer and was wondering the best way to do this. it says on can to use 400 grit sandpaper before painting. should i sand the plastic before painting or should i just clean it real well and prime it with some primer that helps paint stick to plastic? or should i just clean it and spray it with the paint i bought no sanding or primer?

I painted my friend's synergy green cover, we cleaned it down with rubbing alcohol, primed it, and hit it with 1/2 paint & 1/2 reducer in my hvlp sprayer. One shot was enough..it came out great.

Defiantly clean with a degreasing and wax remover and I mean scrub it. Any left over will cause you to to repaint it. I missed a small corner and had to redo. Then clear coat it with two coats. Best of luck.

Absolutely, I even did my SS cover this way, the only difference is I used SEM spray paint for my cover. I don't really have a use for all that paint, otherwise I'd pull out the hvlp sprayer.

I simply cleaned mine, sprayed that stuff that helps paint adhere to plastic then just siply two coats of primer and four coats of Paint with a shot of clear over that. Mine has been on since before summer last year and no cracks or anything.

This is a project currently on my own table. I'm having a great time doing my own mods. I was going to have mine painted by a pro but thought "hey, I'm going to try it, and if I mess it up, THEN I'll send it to the pro..." I have a pretty cool design planned including some drilling, flames, led light strips, and vintage camaro badging. I bought all my paint, blue tape, adhesion promoter, so we'll see how it goes.

I cleaned mine, sanded it with 600grit sand paper, cleaned it again, sprayed adhesive promoter, then the base paint color, then clear.

You could have a paint place paint it for you for around $100-$150. I had mine painted by the dealer (the best price I found) and it turned out really good vs $249. It's IOM and CGM so they painted the whole thing with clear on top:

wax and grease remover, then hit it with some 180 to 320.. prime it then hit it with some 320 and then paint it
good painting is all about prep work
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/album.php?albumid=6059

If I were doing it I would do all I said above but I would seal it before painting it and I would be using a pro gun of course...LOL
