Got an L99 question Manual mode

I've got a year old L99 and I have noticed, from day one, that it smells hot after driving it in manual "tap shift" mode. Not all that hard, just normal "like a standard" I don't notice it while driving and the gauges don't show any more heat. I smell it when I get out. Almost like slipping fan belt, maybe a little oily when I've been driving it like a stick.

Might this be because I need a catch can? Like in manual mode I'm pushing a little more oil into the intake?
I haven't seen any oil leaks, no spots in the garage were I park and I don't notice it when I drive it in auto mode, no mater how hard I drive it!

Thanks

Mine does the exact same thing. I sure hope someone has an answer!

Yeah, I'm thinking it might be building pressure in the crankcase under deceleration and pushing oil through the stock PCV valve into the intake.

Like you said, thought it was just me! Haven't seen anything on here about it yet so thought I would bring it up and see if anyone had an answer for us

I notice the same thing. Mine is brand new and I just had exhaust put on. I thought it was maybe that breaking in, but I do drive it in M mode to avoid the AFM as much as I can. I haven't talked myself into getting it tuned out yet. But yes I notice the same smell after driving.

Haven't noticed this, but will watch for it.

Might this be more related to the brand/type of OEM trans fluid or it being slightly low? It would be interesting to know if anyone who's changed to Amsoil or Royal Purple has observed this behavior?

The oil theory doesn't make sense to me because any oil passing through the PVC system is immediately ingested and burned in the engine. Its supposed to be a sealed system, so there really isn't a way for it to vent. I suppose oil vapor could migrate up into the valve covers and leak out around the oil fill cap? Anyway, I'm no expert, just speculating so perhaps an expert can suggest or figure out the cause.

I'm reposting my comments from another thread that you may be interested in:

"Just got the car back from the dealer and they did the lifter swap but it was still smoking on cold start. Dealer discovered another reported issue ( no TSB though apparently ) regarding an updated Valve Rocker arm Cover - Left Side- part # 12570427 and PCV tube- part # 12617239. Perhaps this would explain why so many are installing Oil Catch cans ! These new parts are on order. "

The new/updated Rocker arm cover is actually the LS3 cover I believe. There is a different baffle plate inside to help reduce/prevent oil from being sucked into the PCV pipe and into the intake. The is still no TSB on this issue but there is a PI #0104B - Excessive oil consumption........

This could explain why under agressive driving there could be oil being sucked into the pcv pipe and subsequently the intake.

NO, there is no leak!!!!
It just smells hot when you drive the auto in manual mode.

My point was that it might be from the motor burning the oil that was being passed through to the intake. I have worked on cars all my life, am now in my 50's, I do my own oil changes and it's not a leak, It's more of a smell. Hot or burning rubber type smell in the engine compartment after driving with the tap shifters and not even getting on it, Just normal driving

This might be what it is!!! Maybe they didn't think we would down shift the auto like you do in the standerd.

Thanks for the input!!!!

OK, at least three of of us have this issue?

Have you folks checked your oil level? I know mine is not losing any on the dipstick. I do change it annually and put less than 3k on the car last year.

If we are burning it shouldn't we be low on oil, at least some?

I have never noticed this myself and I think most of you know I use tapshift exclusively and drive my car agressively.

Same here... I have not noticed this issue and I use CFD's tap shifter.

OK, I guess that rules out the valve cover design on the L99.

I'll have to go out and do some spirited tap shift driving and then do a good underhood inspection and see if I can find anything that might be the cause. I don't really want to put a catch can on just to find out if that might be the cause. I know the dealer is just going to say," Funny, I don't smell anything" like the sales man did when I bought it.
I have used just a touch of oil since my last change but it's been almost 4000 mi and it was down mabe 2 cups. Nothing to show a problem there.

Maybe it's a belt tesioner issue. It doesn't squeel or anything but it might be slipping a little under higher RPM's
