Nail Through Tire And Rim
Hey,
Saturday I caught a huge nail in my rear passenger tire, of course, resulting in a flat tire. Well, it came through the tire and the rim. It gouged a piece of pie shaped piece out of the rim on the edge. My dealership called about an hour ago and said the tire is covered, but the rim is not covered because it is considered cosmetic. I did not think to take pictures yesterday. I have called the dealership to see if I can come down and take pictures today. Hopefully I will be able to stop in there and take pictures. It seems to me that a nail should not be able to puncture a rim. I don't have a lot of knowledge about tires and rims, though. I do have a respectable dealership. My last post on here, they gouged/scratched the passenger front rim on the machine, and they eventually replaced it with a new rim. I had also picked up a nail in the front passenger tire resulting in a slow leak. I've had the car six months. It's a Cyber Grey 2011 RS 2LT. I looked on the forum to see if this was just happening to me. There are a few threads about this topic. I guess I am just wondering about opinions on cosmetic damage verses the rims being possibly not as strong as maybe they should be. If I am allowed to take pictures I will post them on here ASAP. The nail head is in the back of the tire, and you can see where the nail comes through the rim diagonally. Oh, I am very thankful that I am okay. I just put my hazards on and pulled over to the side of the road -- no major excitement. Love This Forum, Love My Camaro, Lisa |

If it is cosmetic, then no, they won't cover it. I'm actually surprised they covered the tire to begin with either.
Take it to a local rim repair shop, its amazing what they can fix up for alot cheaper then what the dealer wants for a new rim. |

It is nice of them to cover the tire for you,as flats due to road hazzards are not covered under the GM bumper-to-bumper warranty.

What about your auto insurance? Will they cover the damage to the rim?

Hi,
I spoke with my service writer. She said I can come and take pictures today. She also said she was taking pictures to email, and they were not showing up too well. I'm going to give it a try, though. I have a purchased tire package through the dealership. That is why they are covering the tire. Of course, that is in the glove box. I'll pick that up today to read more thoroughly. I am wondering what they/we are going to see when they get the tire off of the rim. It sure seems like there is going to be a gash there between where the nail goes in the tire and comes out of the front of the rim. Also, OnStar was amazing. This was my first time ever using OnStar. Thank you for all of your comments so far, Lisa |

Did you buy the wheel and tire protection plan? Seems like the rims should be covered if you did. If not, then yeah, you are lucky they are replacing the tire.

Agreed if you have wheel n tire protection the tire and rim should be covered 100% for damages caused by road hazards >> pot holes, nails, debris fallen off trucks etc.

That was the only thing that I took extra on the car. 5 year coverage for around $300 was well worth it IMO.

If you have the tire and rim package, the rim should be covered, because a gouge in the edge of the rim is not cosmetic! It's a safety problem.
It's true that the package does not cover curb rash. |

Totally worthless without pics!
Sorry about the wheel and tire though.

When I was a kid I remember my Dad had a blowout while we were riding in our 59 Pontiac Star Chief. It happened on a highway that passed directly in front of an old Army-Navy surplus store. When he had the tire removed he found out he'd run over a 30.06 live round that went through the tread bullet first, the primer activated and the round richocheted around the rim. Fortunately rounds detonated like that don't have enough energy to pierce the rim, but it was certainly scary to think of the possibilities.

If the wheel and new tire will hold air, then the damage to the wheel is cosmetic.
