If he hasnt got it by now Monty hes either legally retarded, insanely stubborn and close-minded, or both. Just ignore SlingShot and the rest of this thread is very informative.

The argument was that DG actually did define horsepower. Not that your definition was incorrect. Yours was only irrelevant.
Ok... couldnt help it... ![]() I'm bored at work and this guy makes it way too easy. Very nice try though. Could be a politician. If you're losing the argument, invent a new one and pretend they're the same.

Slingshot, if you want me to define what one horsepower really is ...
Horsepower: a relatively arbitrary unit invented by James Watt to approximate the work that 1 horse was capable of doing. This is equal to 33000 ft-lbs/minute. It is based mainly on the observation that a pony could lift 220 lbs 100 ft in 1 minute and that a horse should be able to do 50% more work. Since that is 100% completely useless when talking about car engines, I'll explain it another way. The piston of an engine does not technically create power. The combustion of fuel exerts a pressure on the piston. This pressure, over the area of the piston is a translated into a force. This force acts parallel to the central axis of the cylinder. This force is acting at a distance from the rotating crankshaft. Such forces are referred to as torque. The ability to exert torque (or generally perform work) in a set amount of time is known as power. Using hp, ft-lbs, and rpm as our units for power, torque, and time their relationship can be mathematically defined as hp=rpm*ft-lb/5252

Yes we have a definition of horsepower. We have an explanation of torque. We also have a data conversion that has been mathematically defined ie. Hp = (torque x rpm) / 5252

Sooo... you were wrong, DG was right, and now you need to save face. Got it, glad we cleared this up.
We all believe you when you say this was what you meant all along... ![]() Moving on...
