Do you honestly blame the dealer for wanting to see if the problem occurs with the factory air intake before they proceed further with trying to diagnose the problem with aftermarket parts on the car?

Any mechanic who is worth his weight in salt would want to start at "ground zero" with the problem. That means trying to identify the problem using the factory parts and fix it using factory parts before proceeding to using aftermarket parts and determining if the problem continues or not.

Just because an aftermarket part worked on your previous vehicles does not guarantee that it will work without a problem on a new car. Its doubtful that the K & N is the issue....but stranger things have happened in this new world of computerized cars. Give the dealer a chance before you slam him so bad for trying to give you an accurate diagnosis of the problem.

K&N filter

I drove it home with the OEM AC filter installed, NO improvement. Pulled fuse 5 & 20, we'll see tomorrow.

Thats very true. One of the first things TAN (GM Tech Assistance) will ask if a tech calls them for help is "Does it have afftermarket parts?", and if the tech says yea its got a K&N filter they will tell the tech to put the veh. back to factory specs. They will not go any further until its back to factory specs.

As a side note, lots of dealers are dicks about K and N. Some dealerships even will go as far as to void your warranty. They say that the oil in the filter interferes with sensitive MAF's. Not saying that is true, just saying what I have heard.
A year or so ago I bought a K & N filter and oil spray kit. I followed the dirrections and applied the oil. A day later my check engine light came on. I checked the code and it said exhaust manifold sensor and air pump. We'll I took it to the dealer and $1350.00 later, they had replaced two sensors, an air injection pump, cleaned the throttle body and re-tuned the car. (I only trusted the dealer to do the job right which meant only GM parts(Cost double).) It ran great, but the cost was crazy! That was one of the reasons I sold that car. Be careful when oiling the filter! You may not realize that you are putting too much oil on! I still don't know if that's what caused it, but it did happen right after I put the filter in.

If they get this excited about a $50 air filter, they will really get fired up about a $500 Magnaflow exhaust modification.Makes me want to think twice about any future mods.

Why would you oil up a brand new K&N filter?

My friend had a problem with his 2008 Ram his K&N had to much oil on it and messed up the sensor. The dealer cleaned it but gave him some BS about it but at least they didn't charge him.

I see things haven't changed in Corpus Christi since I left. I tried both dealers in that town and ended up with the dealer in Portland. I talking about their BS OH we'll get right on it and 5:00 they still haven't touched it. How your are handled should be the dealers main objective. My dealer says that bolt ons won't cause any warrenty problems. I have CAI and exhaust on mine w/a tune.

There is a GM service bulletin about oil from K&N filters causing MAF issues. I don't think the dealer was screwing you, he was just doing it by the book.

A friend of mine drives a big Silverado diesel, and the K&N for that screwed up his MAF big time. It just depends on how much oil is on it and how much air is getting sucked through it.
