if you want a lot more respect for going fast then get a manual. an auto is the way to go if you want fast consistent times and want to pay out the arse when you break something. an manual is cheaper to work on and in my mind earns more respect if you can muscle the car faster then avg. |

...and modern automatics don't break just because you hurry every time you accelerate. If you accelerate hard every time, you're going to beat the hell out of a manual but not an auto. If you consistently powershift all the time it won't last long at all, and it's probably not so good for the engine either.

If the auto is as close in performance to the stick as the article mentions (even if in reality the auto ends up slightly 'slower') then it's an auto for me. The active fuel management and remote start are two big features I'd really like, and at least in my case I'm not as concerned about a .3 second or so difference in 0-60 times.
While I am looking forward to going fast and enjoying some spirited driving with a new SS, I am also looking forward to taking it on longer trips - maybe Route 66, or through some winding roads in the Black Hills. For me this is more than a speed car... for me, this is the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of a new American icon and to unfurl its wings on the open roads of this great country. |

From a dig it will be very close I am sure. But on the highway or a roll the stick will pull the auto everytime (stock for stock). Its lighter, has more HP and less drivetrane loss. Once you are IN gear the MT will pull on the AT

I want auto for remote start so I don't have 3 remotes. Already have 2, one for my truck and the other for the gated community.

I respect the ones that have fast setups but I respect the ones that muscle their way to a faster time with a stick. it's harder to do and so many factors play into it. unlike an auto where you stomp and go.

It would get frustrating though if you could never beat an automatic V8 SS with the manual Automatic SS on a race track no matter how good you actually shift..

I'm not getting a stick for any reason other than having fun driving the car. If I can't beat an automatic from a dig, I don't care. The car has enough power for me to enjoy. I might go higher later on, but since I'm not a hardcore racer, a few tenths is nothing to me.

AT vs MT
What I like about a manual is the advantage to brake wear. In my 87 IROC I got 80,000 miles on a set of brakes. Being able to slow down using the gears was so much better than applying the brakes all the time. Also being able to drive in the city at slower speeds was better for me. Keeping it in 3rd or 4th keep my speed right around 30-35 easier than having an auto and having to watch my speed all the time. My final case for a MT was better fuel mileage.
The only disadvantage to having a MT was no free hand to hold my soda or pet my GF, lol

Betcha that raised your gas mileage up though, ...getting those rpm's way up there w/ your downshifts to slow you down after all that time. Sure, you'd save your brakes, but dang....that cost of gas! That's exactly where the hybrids are trying to save gas, not use more. Just my opinion, but I'd say use those brakes. Unless someone can prove me wrong. Seriously, I'm open to the idea.
