My math says 439 hp at 1.1 lb-ft/cu in

1.1 x 376 = 413.6 ft-lbs
.9 x 413.6 = 372.24 ft-lbs
6200 x 372.24 = 2,307,888 ft-lbs x RPM
2,307,888/5252 = 439.4 hp

I wrote Jeff Smith an email. (author of the article) I asked if he could get us a better torque to CI factor on the two SS motors. Gave him what a Chevy brochure had for the two compression ratios. Sorry, Rockin, I didn't ask about your factory freak!

I think you are reading to much into the formula. This is more along the lines of a "rule of thumb" than a 100% accurate formula. 1.085 gives 433 hp and 1.00 gives 400 hp. Of course that leaves out the gross vs net discussion.

Unfortunately, no it isn't. It still is just 400 hp. However, the V6 actually cranked out more power than what GM originally estimated hence the 304 hp and then the updated 312 hp rating on the LLT.

I get the it’s not gospel thing but fun anyway. From Jeff:

“Dave,
Those numbers will be very close. I would suspect the LS3/L99 engines would come in around 1.28 or so - but each engine is dfferent. That number should be close.

For example 376 x 1.28 = 481 for torque x 0.9 = 433 then you have to choose the peak hp rpm - this is the big variable. Higher rpm (bigger cam) will produce more hp. Likely the peak rpm for hp will be around 6,300 as an estimate - which puts it at 519 hp.

Hope this helps. Have fun!”

Jeff

519, Gringo. Truly too much for what it is!

No sweat. I got you over 100 flywheel horsepower today and you didn’t have to lift a wrench or bust a knuckle!

I believe back in the 60's when they claimed HP on motors they were reporting gross which was a little misleading. I'm not sure thats what they did though.
yup.back in the day tests were run with no accessories hooked up.very misleading.

I’m sure it does...probably around the 5th decimal place.
