EDIT:
Try to only use the flashed PCM when you plan on running the car hard. If you are heavily modded, you will need to keep the flashed PCM at all times to run properly.
lol, love this guy.

I have plenty of "friends" that are service managers at dealerships. Quite a few at the GM Tech center also.

There is no flash counter or mileage counter in the ECM.

Any parameters that are "learned" such as idle and fuel trims are lost when power is removed also.

A Tech II can not tell if a custom tune was done. The dealership would have to send the ECM/TCM to a GM engineer and methodically go through parameters to see what was done.

If you tune it with LS-edit or efi-live or whatever, does it not change the calibration #? The handheld flash devices do, which is how a lot of the diesel guys were getting nailed...

Does anyone know what all information GM OnStar service pulls down on the monthly diagnostics reports that they offer for "free"? Wonder if they are getting ECM specific data on a monthly bases and can database it for future warranty claims????

I was told that if you are getting a tune to call and cancel the diagnaostic service on your car. You're essentially broadcasting that your car has been tuned.

A GM engineer posted this in the Tuning section. While the computer doesn't have flash counting turned on, the ECM has the capability. So all it takes is a GM update if they decide to activate it. Dodge recently did this on their 6.7 diesel.

On another note. In talking to the Edelbrock SC designers, they told me that they had issues with ecm's that had been "returned to stock" by the handheld. Not all settings got reset. Not everyone by any means, but they had a supply of ECM's to send to customers who had this problem.

Does the E38 have a “flash counter”?
Both the original E38A and E38B have support for a flash “tracking system” of sorts. While it’s not as in depth as the Bosch E35 used on the LMM trucks it does exist however current production releases have it disabled, but this could change at any time. When programmed by a GM Facility the unit already stores the programming date (as sent by the programming software) as well as the programming station or repair facility ID.

OLMS/Odometer
OLMS does have an Odometer?
Yes it does, its used for a very small part of the OLMS system operation.

“OLMS is partially in the ECM”
OLMS resides in it entirety in the ECM. On this note OLMS does not read mileage from the IPC or any other module in the vehicle.

“The 2009.5 G8 ECM is the same as the Camaro”
While they both have the revisions for the new version 8 software they are most certainly not the same. The 2009.5 L76/LS3 G8 uses the 12625455 ECM for software rev 8.9 while the Camaro uses the 12633238 for the newer 8.10 software. In fact if you load a Camaro calibration into the G8 ECM it will render it unusable.

AFM actually can be controlled by the transmission status bit, this is how it’s turned off in Manual mode otherwise when the ECM saw the conditions even in manual mode to enter AFM it would. The AFM enable by trans status bit can be set in the ECM.

I don't think it's just that easy....if GM has the hooks in the car for remote diagnostics, I am sure that they could "poll" each car without anyone knowing it. I guess the safest bet would be if you want them to know nothing, then disable On-Star totally so it renders it useless. Otherwise data can be pulled remotely.
