Whipple and Catch can....options and/or opinions needed!

The foundation:

2012 LS3 w/Whipple 2.9L (3" pulley, ~16psi)
- Stock rotating assembly
- 10% OD damper
- ported stock heads
- 1-7/8" LT headers

Currently, I am using a Mike Norris catch can. My problem is that I continue to find a decent amount of oil behind my throttle body and in the inlet plenum of my Whipple. I have the can routed as follows:

- Driver's valve cover PCV to top fitting of Catch Can.
- Side fitting of catch can to front vacuum port on Whipple.

- Passenger valve cover PCV to air intake elbow (after the MAF, pre-TB)
- oil fill cap replaced with CFM Breather w/check valve

The valley tray PCV fitting is capped per Whipple's install instructions.

Do I have this thing hooked up correctly? Is this can just not adequate for my setup?

Thanks,
Scott

I'm not familiar with that brand of can but it sounds like a similar setup to the elite can I was running. I also had too much oil getting into the Whipple with the elite so I am in the process of setting up a mighty mouse system now that the Whipple is reinstalled.

My first test drive still pulled too much oil into the can so I am waiting for a regulator fitting to reduce the vacuum from the blower to the can. I'm also going to put a one-way valve in the line from the elbow to the passenger side cover to make sure it doesn't suck oil from that side inadvertently.

I think my biggest issue is the tall Holley valve covers I'm running that don't have much baffling and let too much oil escape.

I have to say mighty mouse (don't know his real name) has been very responsive and helpful with suggestions to get the system right for me.

Quick update...got the fittings installed and no more excess oil in the can from the same test route. Now it's time to put some more miles on it.

I disassembled the can to re-clock the inlet and outlet and I'm really impressed with the design. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Hey Larry_G, thanks for the responses and info. I think based off of your replies I'm going to look into getting the Mighty Mouse catch can as well.

Can you take a picture of your setup, or a napkin drawing, of how its setup/routed?

Thanks,
Scott.

This is actually the G8 mild setup because it comes with the mount for the driver's side shock tower. Although I had to modify it a bit.

The outlet of the can has the regulator and straight hose fittings and connects to the middle port on the Whipple.

The inlet side of the can has the 90 hose fitting and is connected directly to the rear of the driver's side valve cover with nothing inline.

The can is designed so you can change which is the inlet port and which is the outlet port.

The cap and hose off the top replaces the standard filter top that bleeds off any over pressure. This is his track setup and is designed to route the venting away from potential ignition sources in the engine bay.

I also used one of his one-way boost valves in the hose from the elbow to the front of the passenger side valve cover to make sure it only flows air in and no oil out.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Larry_G!! I think I'm going to try running an inline restrictor to limit the vacuum signal going to the driver's side valve cover.
