The current CAFE standards are broken, and the extension of CARB into brake pads and "brake cleaner" is ridiculous. California "AIR" resources board should have no jurisdiction over brake pads. But they get away with it and that's wrong.

But unfortunately neither are in the 1BBB.
Actually they do. Particulates from airborne brake dust are a real thing. Just as much as airborne particulates from diesel engines is a real thing. I'm not sure what the severity of the exposure is or what the health impacts are but it is a thing.

You ain’t said the half of it. The “shadow area” or “footprint” measures for defining the targets for trucks has the unintended(?) result of making targets “easier” to achieve for bigger trucks. If you add to that the pedestrian protection requirements that favor vehicles with higher hoods and vertical grills and you get pickups and SUVs that start to take on the appearance of Class 8 semis.

Planned Obsolescence?

Quote:
As we can see, EVs by their very nature have an expiration date. Even if batteries don't degrade as fast as we thought, there will come a time when an EV can no longer cover a sensible distance, and then you'll have no choice but to send it to the scrapyard. I don't think it was planned, but it is possibly the biggest argument against electric vehicles. If you look at our list of million-plus mile cars, you'll see a trend. They're all simple, easy to fix, and built sturdy straight from the factory. For the most part, they're also from the 1980s to the mid-2000s, before too many nannies and screens entered the picture.

It's probably a matter of time before car OEMs try to force a "licensed for use" type of arrangement on us, where we pay for the right to use a car that we never actually own, much like the recent change to the Nintendo Switch platform.

GM Is Pushing Hard to Tank California’s EV Mandate

Article in today's Wall Street Journal

https://www.wsj.com/business/autos/c...ustry-64708033

Unfortunately its behind a pay wall so the super Cliffs version is GM is no longer all in on EV's

Slightly expanded summary:

Key Points

- GM urges employees to lobby against California’s 2035 gas-car ban, which has been adopted by 11 other states.

- EV sales are slowing; discounts are down, and Congress might roll back tax credits, affecting affordability.

- Even in California, EV sales lag behind targets. Zero-emissions vehicles account for 20% of sales, below the 35% goal.

That is less a sign that GM is back-tracking on EV and more a sign that GM recognizes that “you can’t get there from here” with regards to no ICE new car sales by 2035. GM has modified their portfolio and their EV roll-out, but it is still very aggressive when compared to other companies that aren’t Tesla / Rivian / Lucid. GM is making room for PHEVs and/or REEVs in their portfolio.

GM’s BOD needs to can Barra and promote Reuss to CEO. Before Barra shoeboxed him to EV land he was as instrumental in developing GM performance ICE as John DeLorean.

He’ll still throw you tree huggers an EV bone to keep you happy but he’d absolutely refocus ICE V6 and V8 affordable performance for everyone who doesn’t want an appliance.

Could you imagine how social media would have driven the last 150 years of innovation let alone the last few 1000 years of innovation.

Crazy when you think about it like that!

I will admit a lot of things that I didn't think in reality would happen are actually happening. Was expecting the Manufacturers to pump out mostly Hybrids you can fill up with gas, plug in hybrids and EVs with a much smaller pool of ICE vehicles by 2030-35 range. Now it seems ICE will still have a pretty big picture.

Nothing is set in stone I was just saying nothing seems at least on paper to be as guaranteed as it once was. Manufacturers still could do what I thought before. I should have stated what I said above better.

GM CEO Mary Barra named the most powerful woman in business by Fortune
Adrienne Roberts - Detroit Free Press

General Motors Co. Chair and CEO Mary Barra has been named Fortune's most powerful woman in business, the media company announced Wednesday.

The 27th edition of the Fortune Most Powerful Women in business list recognizes 100 global leaders. The list includes 65 female CEOs and the ranking is based on company size and health, their career path, influence beyond their organization and how they wield power, Fortune said.

Fortune described Barra as a "trailblazer in the auto industry" and noted that among the 55 women currently leading Fortune 500 companies, Barra is one of only nine who have been CEO for a decade or more.

Below are the top 10 "Most Powerful Women":

Barra
Karen Lynch, president and CEO of CVS Health
Jane Fraser, CEO of Citigroup
Julie Sweet, chair and CEO of Accenture
Emma Walmsley, CEO of GlaxoSmithKline
Ruth Porat, president, CIO and CFO of Alphabet and Google
Safra Catz, CEO of Oracle
Lisa Su, chair and CEO of Advanced Micro Devices
Kathryn McLay, president and CEO of Walmart International
Grace Wang, co-founder and chairwoman of Luxshare Precision
