Fuel and Timing

I noticed some threads making reference to how the type of fuel in the camaro changes its performance is this an actual detection system in the car? How do i know mine is not messing up and lowering my performance?

1 SS/RS manual, only use premium 93 octane

u should be fine if you stick to using 93, i've heard others say that if u use a lesser grade it could cause problems

yeah i was guessing i was ok but just never heard anything about this fuel detection anywhere else. I am paying the extra for premium wanted to make sure my camaro was performing at its best.

the SS's are tuned for 91 octane so run 91 or higher and it will be fine. Running 93 or 100 will not help you any more than the 91 but running less than 91 can pull timing if it detects knock.

Yeah i can't get anything higher than 91 around here. And understand that the car won't perform any better with >91, but would it be true to say that >91 would burn cleaner? Cleaner... as in less gunk buildup on valves n such? Or is this just a myth that commercials state to get you to buy the more expensive fuel? (I am no fuel expert, just curious)

If you feel like you arn't getting full performance I believe you may want to check the LS3/L99 forum... I think the manual you do a battery unhook to reset the fuel monitor (or whatever). In some cases dealers have put in regular fuel (<91) prior to customer pickup, and that will cause the computer to 'underperform'. Someone else may be able to put this in words better than I.

If you put lower than 91 in a V8, it will throw off the timing. You would then need to do the "fuse pull" as discussed in this thread:

I don't mean to sound like an expert, but that's just what I've read.
