On another note, if you compare R&T's 'article' time for the SS at 12.9 with the 'article' time of the M5 at 12.8, also very comparable times. Also, the test run they made was a 2008 M5... wonder how many miles it had, or how broken in it was already. R&T's was almost brand new. Almost guaranteed to gain 'some' ground when that Camaro breaks in...
A M5 is way easier to drive fast than a Camaro...so if you have 2 average drivers the M5 is going to come out ahead.

You guys can twist this however you want, but that M5 is going to own you all day long.

12.8 is the slowest quoted time I have seen for the M5. 12.5 @ 115mph is more the norm, which is out of reach for the average SS.

The M5 is the fastest stock car on the list which is barely faster then the SS. However, like the Evo the M5 has forced induction which means it can be just as easily upgraded with a tune to allow more HP. I have not researched to see how much the M5 can gain, but a proper tune on similar cars can yield over 50rwhp. So I don't see how anyone can think the M5 is a joke. Just my $.02.

Ok, there's my problem with this whole thing then. Am I confusing this with the 535 turbo? So let me re-evaluate, it will be close for the M5 (it still has 500hp) and still watch out for those pesky Evos

It's nice to hear that the middle of the line Camaro (SS) is getting pitched against BMW's top of the line M5. Wait until that Z28 debuts... I smell annihilation!

So mid 12's is pretty much the accepted 1/4 time for a 2008 M5. An L99 Camaro got a 12.47 with CAI, Headers and tune. Hardly much money spent to get it in comparable territory. And there's nothing easier to drive fast then an auto

Ummmm, let me think about this. M5, starting at $85,000, 17MPG hwy, 155 mph Top Speed, 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

Camaro SS/RS $38,000, 24MPG hwy, 155 Top Speed (electronically limited), 0-60 in 4.6 seconds.

Ahhhhh, I'd go with the Camaro.

I love my M5...and still want a Z28 Convertible when it arrives...now, to start that can and bottle route to make money for it...

I will say to the original poster that the M5 is wicked fast and easy to drive that way right out of the box. One fun car that I would recommend to anyone. Buy it with a warranty though - expensive to fix.

And figure well north of 500 horsepower in the next M5...twin-turbo 5.0 V8 is the rumor.

I would love to own an M5. There's more to it than just the performance numbers we're comparing here. Sure there are cheaper ways to go faster, but that's not why you buy an M5. To me a car is about the whole package/experience of owning and driving it. I'm thrilled to say I own a 5th gen Camaro SS. May not be the best in any one category, but overall is the best choice for me. Someday, should I be so lucky, there will be other cars like M5's that call my garage "home".

BMW is already ahead of iteself with the M3. It is faster than the M5 with 0-60 at 4.1 and 1/4 mile at 12.5.
