The official news for the 2011 Mustang...(Well official as it gets before the Detroit show)

Quote:
To Ford Mustang fans, 5.0 means a lot, and the new 2011 5.0-liter V8 Mustang will deliver 412 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque, company officials said on Thursday. The information was supposed to be embargoed until Dec. 28, but news leaked out shortly after the announcement in Dearborn, Mich.

The new 5.0-liter Mustang produces 83 hp per liter yet will return 25 mpg, according to Ford marketing boss Jim Farley. The 5.0-liter Mustang’s main competitors are the Chevrolet Camaro SS, rated at 426 hp, and the Dodge Challenger SRT8, which makes 425 hp. Of course, the top-of-the-line Shelby GT500 and its supercharged V8 is rated at 540 hp.

What makes the brand-new V8 engine powering the ’Stang so potent is how engineers were able to allow the engine to breathe. All-new heads sit atop an all-new aluminum block with cast-iron cylinder sleeves. The wide distance between the heads allows for the intake ports to sit vertically on top of the engine. The engine features four valves per cylinder and twin independent variable valve timing. Tuned exhaust headers eliminate the need for aftermarket headers to let the engine breath better. Inside the engine are a forged-steel full counterweight crankshaft and four-bolt main bearings and high-performance pistons and connecting rods. Peak horsepower is reached at 6,500 rpm.

The new 5.0-liter Mustangs can be fitted with either the 6R80 automatic transmission or the MT82 six-speed manual.

The pony car will make its official debut at the Detroit auto show in January.

So there you have it 412/390 Tq. With aluminium block, I do not see a whole lot of weight gain. Also the forge insides. Good move on Ford part indeed. Also with the track pack basically a standard option and along with the Brembo option, I would say Ford has loaded up both barrels against our GM brethren.

Dodge ? Ohhhh Dodge !

Well most mod engines from ford take very well to F/I style apps. Cams and Headers do well also. The news here are the fact its coming with Aftermarket style performance heads. In other words, according to what this says, there will be no need to replace them. So mod wise on a low budget, your talking about Cats backs, CIA, Tune. Which the 4.6 responded well to. I would only guess the 5.0 would respond just as well.

As for F/I, Whipple has finished their blower already. They have had the engine for a spell now. I would only imagine KB, Ede, and ATI also have finished their projects. Suspension wise nothing has changed, and there may not even be a need with a track pack like suspension already there.

Yes...things have gotten very interesting indeed.

Very nice for the Mustang. It's about time. It's a nice looking car but it doesn't quite do anything for me aesthetically. That much HP on the lighter chasis will be fun to drive though.

For one thing, its power peak is at 6500 rpm. Typically for hp to be less than torque you'd need a lower power peak, somewhere below 6000 rpm. This is due to the natural tendancy for torque to drop off at high rpm and that hp is a function of torque and rpms. At 6500 rpm, that engine is only making 333 ft-lbs, vs the 390 at its peak. Scale the rpms back and it makes less power, and eventually torque will become the higher number, probably at about 5800 rpm or so for this engine (depending on the shape of the torque curve).

The other reason is getting 85 ft-lbs/L is damm near impossible for a naturally aspirated engine from the factory right now. HP/L is a different story, you can wind it out all you want and increase power. But torque doesn't let you play games like that. It is linked very closely to displacement. Few vehicles on sale today have less than 60 ftlbs/L or more than 80 ft-lbs/L without forced induction. This covers economy cars to trucks to exotics.

Can't wait til this this thing hits the streets.

On the Dodge Front, according to the factory employees the 11 Challenger with finally get the Pentastart V6, 5.7 will carry over for the R/T and the SRT will finally get the 6.4 V8. We don't have any HP figures yet, but 11 should be a damned interesting year.

That 6.4l is a beast can only hope dodge will get on the ball with it. Challengers just aren't selling. Only seen 2 on the road in my life one being a base model another a r/t.

At 3650 it's still with in 200# of the SS. With 390 TQ I would have to give a stop light race to the SS. If GM offers the rumored 3.73 gearing on the SS I think it will stay ahead. It will be close, can't wait to see on at the track next year.

Now that I read this car pretty much comes with factory headers it may be pretty much maxed out. Bolt-on's won't give much of a gain. You have to buy 4 cams instead of our 1

Weight gain may not come from the engine, the block is aluminum but you're adding 2 more cams. Also I'm not seeing forged internals, just crank. High performance pistons and rods can mean any thing. I still see the car coming in around 3,650 lbs. With 390 TQ, we'll see.
