Before this thread turns into a cop-bashing session, I want to point out that a lot of good women and men serve our communities with those badges and flashing lights. There are bad ones and incompetent ones, but the overwhelming truth is that we need them and they do a good job on the whole.

Intelligent beings naturally group things together into categories. Cops, thus, will group together certain categories of vehicles into the group that should be targeted. It might be conscious. It also might be unknown to the person doing it. This basic psychology causes those of us in sports cars to experience more tickets than anyone else, even if we tend to be just as good or better at following the rules.

The best way to fight this sort of profiling is to make yourself available for the court date. I don't know if OnStar can verify your speed at that time, but contacting OnStar might be worth a try. I would also get some sort of car camera that you routinely backup on your computer. Any good footage might make a good montage for YouTube. Any legal footage might make a nice court win.

Another thing for future help....

If you get a handheld GPS, many of them will actually store "highest speed reached" in there memory. Any time you are on the interstate with the cruise set.... Clear that memory. Then when the cop stops you and claims you were going a certain speed... You can dig that GPS out and show him that you were not going that speed.
Since it will also show distance traveled on the GPS, he cant accuse you of resetting it while he was pulling you over.

I dont care for the Onstar GPS sometimes, but it works..... Now i am thinking about buying a small GPS, just for a back up though

I am very sorry for your loss.

For what it's worth, i have not had a speeding ticket in over 15 years. My camaro was delivered on sep. 29th and i have been stopped twice and received tickets both times. The first time i knew how fast i was going but i didn' know the speed limit had changed from 45 To 35 on a four lane road. i was running 52mph less than 100 yards past the sign nobody around here has ever seen. The other ticket i am sure should have been given to the G8 that passed me just seconds before the blue lights came on. The cop mentioned he had a 67 mustang with a big engine. Just my experience in the last three months. I love my camaro but police envy is about to break me.

While a GPS might help, don't bank on it. I know of two cases where people brought their GPS to court, both lost. Ruling was based upon the fact that the GPS isn't 100% accurate, nor is it a factory installed speed sensing device. I've seen them as much as 5mph off compared to the vehicles (my own GPS [Tom Tom]and car) speedometer.

If you can't appear, NC courts will continue this the first time for any (no) reason. Your attorney will handle this without you having to be there. Do you know if you were in Johnston or Wake county? What court are you scheduled to appear at? I may know an attorney who could help.

I too am sorry to hear of your loss and appreciate what you are doing for your country!

I have been clear of tickets for 10 years and got pulled outta the crowd coming back from Charleston to Charlotte after Christmas. There were at least 10 cars going 80 to 82 and the cop pulled me out of the middle of the pack! Fortunately my wife was with me as were my kids and they all gave him the 'give my dad a break' plee asking why he made the other cars pull over to get to me? I was lucky and only got a warning.

Also - I was running a black Lexus GS300 last few years routinely 80 to 90 mph daily with a 100 mile round trip each and every and had no issues...a few times blew right by the median cop in the stalking mode on 485 north and 85 north...guess it was not a "profiled" car!
