I understand where your parent's are coming from. And though you don't appreciate it now, if your used to switching cars often, its going to cost you down the road.

The Charger is a more practical car, and (for college) it is the one your better off with. Its the one you already own, and it will cost you nothing to keep it, keep saving your money, and buy a Camaro or something else which is even cooler when you get out of school.

Its hard to think that far down the road, but when you go to school your going to be putting all kinds of crazy things in your car (like... people for instance) and a coupe is just going to be a royal PITA.

Agree and most likely im gonna look back and thank them for stopping me and remembering this thread, and all opinions in it. lol this might be my last thread for some time because Camaro 5 is part of my problem, the more I come to this site the more I want. May be time to delete this site from my bookmarks until I can "afford" a Camaro

I work with my friend who 18 just got himself a 2010 GT mustang(under his parents name and his parents insurance) and makes fun of my 135 Hp "Boat" , It makes me want a camaro even more.
but half his money every month goes to his car.

And it will continue to go there long after the thrill of owning a car like that has worn off.

You want him to keep it the rest of his life?
No...I don't want it back, it's his. It's in my name and I pay his insurance, and if he wanted to sell it, he could.

But I'm not buying a second car for him...he can do that on his own if he wants. right now his insurance is cheaper, no car payment and he has more time for friends sine he doesn't have to pay anything.

I think once I explained that and we wrote it all down, he realized he would be working more and have less time for friends to pay for something he wanted to share with his friends...kind of funny how that works huh?

Well, I appologize if this is coming on too strongly, Hope you don't take it the wrong way.

I would probably be full of regret... if my folks had hooked me up with a new charger when I wanted that and then turned around and sold it off for a fraction of what they paid.. to get myself the new "what I want" car.... especially if they were doing not so well financially..... I don't think I would enjoy driving it under those circumstances.

They may not be willing to accept your help now but.... with things not being stable... they might NEED that help in a few months down the road... and if you go for the Camaro you won't be in a position to help.

I am 28 now.. I just bought my Camaro my self.... I have never had a car before and my parents were never in a position to do that for me. But they helped me out big time in the past , brought me into this world, and supported me throughout my life in ways no dollar will ever make up for. I am financially able to help them a bit now during these poor economic times... My dad was laid off, and moms been having a hard time with work... So I am in a position to help out and am super glad that I can.

I dunno.. You seem lucky from where I'm sitting. Nobody where I grew up got new cars when they were 16... The guys who got em, worked for em.. And they definately weren't Camaro's.. The rest got beaters or bus passes. lol.. I'd wait until you could buy one flat out knowing that your family is going to be fine too. You're an 18 year old with an already wicked car, with some money saved, a job, and an education in motion... You're doing fantastic... Family first bro !

You're only in a no rent / no expenses situation right now because your folks are sheltering you. They obviously have voiced strongly they feel it is not something they approve of.... living under their roof I think that should hold some authority...

Anyways... I went through the same obsession as you... believeeeee me.... camaro5'ing until the sun comes up.. fighting the sleepiness to read another Camaro post. I have THOUSANDS of camaro images on my PC.... everywhereeeee... Camaro models in my room, calendars, posters, drawings... I'd ditch it all in a heartbeat if it came down to helping family though.

Get an 011 model if you've got the full cost then and families situations looking better !!

Sounds like your parents feel they did you a solid by giving you a sweet car. And now want you to be responsible. And the fact that they are now going through hardships... probably only makes it even more frustrating to see you willing to sacrifice a very good situation you got goin for you, only to make things harder on yourself. They don't wanna see you finding yourself in a sticky situation and are hoping you'll not have to learn that lesson the hard way.

A lot of parents bust their butt's so that their kids don't have to.

Good luck though man !
Hope I didn't offend you with my blunt opinion. I would have said the same to any friend of mine in your shoes...

You sound like a pretty responsible person except for the part where you mention your buddies stang. Screw his opinion of your current ride inless he's going to kick in some cash towards replacing it. We all know your feelings and your addiction. So close you can taste it. However, you are under their roof and if at all possible don't screw up that relationship. Back when I used to know everything, I screwed it up and my dad got tired of living with a complete genius. I was booted out between the last day of school and graduation ceremonies. It took years to rebuild a relationship with my parents. We all have to do our own thing but for now I'm going to suggest you put the dream on hold. Get through college, get a job, see if you can still get free room and board and then go order your dream car. Best of luck no matter your decision

Btw, you must have come accross really well because this is the first time I haven't seen a firestorm of opinions between board members like happens on these type of threads. Maybe it's just early.

Bro, you have a niCe muscle car for an 18 yr old and you should be happy! Dont watch what other peeps tell you about your Charger, that thing will be a super heritage muscle car in the next decade (if i was u i wont sell the Charger! instead, pamper and look after it).
My 26yr old cousin has a black Charger; bought it brand new in 2007 and since i got my Camaro he was goin' crazy and wanted to get one on finance... he is in a similar situation as you and he'd be payin' half of his salary on loan, whereas hes happily rollin' with the sexy Charger with no payments. I put sence in his head and now hes v.happy with it and really lookin' after that pony. He just got his Borla catback exhaust system installed and hes lovin' her!

I hope this helps, wish you all the best bro.

Personally, if i was you, the Charger is a keeper!
That day will come when you will say... CAMARO? OK HERES THE CASH!

You know, I think many of us were at a similar juncture in life like you. To give my own story here might also add some perspective.

I worked at Pathmark Foods for almost 10 years as a part time cashier, who constantly called in sick and was late to work; making the better part of $10.00 an hour at the end of my run there in 2006. Not only did I make less than $100.00 a week, but thought it was "ok" because I KNEW my parents would take care of me. They bought me a college commuter car in 1996 (a horrible 1985 Dodge Charger) and then a used Beretta GT (V6). Probably totaling close to $5500.00 total in cars. My parents had virtually no money to help me, but God bless my father, may he rest in peace, he paid for everything.

Then when I continued college in 2001, I did something even MORE irresponsible and bought used, but BEAUTIFUL 1998 Camaro Convertible RS (V6) (See my albums for pics). I bought this car with left over college LOAN money. $15.4K for the Camaro with 43K miles on it. Huge upgrade from what I had, but I clearly could not afford that Camaro. To this day, I'm still paying it off in the form of student loans.

I paid very little for rent and food, played video games and was a total waste of life at the time.

There was one friend of mine who encouraged me to start my own business, and thought it wouldn't work, but fortunately, it has grown immeasurably and am doing well now with my wife, who is thankfully also doing well. Not wealthy, but enough to pay for our student loan debts (I paid hers off--all $13,000.00 in 12 months time--Now, I focus on my own $14,000.00 remaining, which is the remainder of my 1998 Camaro, which I no longer have).

From that point on, I was able to buy new cars, a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt SS/SC brand new IN 2006 and now my Gen 5 2010 Camaro 2SS, fully loaded, minus the $5,000.00 wheels.

For years, up until 2003, I took everything my parents did for granted and didn't even pay them rent when I should have been.

What is the morale of this long story? You need to be THANKFUL your parents were great enough to get you a Dodge Charger. By selling the car to get a Camaro is disgusting, reprehensible, irresponsible, insulting and certifiably disrespectful. You live at home? You should NOT be getting a Camaro. Take your parents for granted and then keep taking, taking taking.....You will be extremely guilty should God forbid anything happen to them and their financial situation. Be patient, go to college, get a decent job and save responsibly. Please heed my advice and the advice of others here. You will be better for it and when you can move out and support yourself, you'll be in a better position to make your own rules instead of bending your parents' rules. PLEASE be responsible and realistic. Good luck man!

My first question is are your parents paying for school or are you paying or have scholarship? If they are paying and struggling with bills you buying a new car might not be good right now. If things get bad for them and they need to consider selling their house you might need to worry about paying for school yourself or worse rent and utilities. I'd say If you are paying school bills then it's not that big a deal. But what happens if they can't afford to float you without rent. Most parents wont ask for it because they care about you, but they would be very proud of you offering it. I know you want this car bad (who wouldn't) but I was 28 when I got my 2010, and I remember lusting after the 2002 F-bodies. Maybe I could have afforded a V6 then but I waited and in September of 09 I rolled away in a loaded SS. It's a though decision but you sound smart enough to make the right choice. Just do what feels right and everything will work out in the end. Good Luck!
