From the Texas Transportation Code 502.404

(1) assigned by the department for the period; or

(2) validated by a registration insignia issued by the department that establishes that the vehicle is registered for the period.

(b) A person commits an offense if the person operates on a public highway during a registration period a passenger car or commercial motor vehicle, other than a vehicle assigned license plates for the registration period, that does not properly display the registration insignia issued by the department that establishes that the license plates have been validated for the period.

(c) A person commits an offense if the person operates on a public highway during a registration period a road tractor, motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer that does not display a license plate, attached to the rear of the vehicle, that has been:

(1) assigned by the department for the period; or

(2) validated by a registration insignia issued by the department that establishes that the vehicle is registered for the period.

(d) Subsections (a) and (b) do not apply to a dealer operating a vehicle as provided by law.

(e) An offense under this section is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed $200.

(f) A court may dismiss a charge brought under Subsection (a) if the defendant:

(1) remedies the defect before the defendant's first court appearance; and

(2) pays an administrative fee not to exceed $10.

(g) A court may dismiss a charge brought under Subsection (b) if the defendant:

(1) shows that:

(A) the passenger car or commercial motor vehicle was issued a registration insignia by the department that establishes that the vehicle was registered for the period during which the offense was committed; and

(B) the registration insignia described in Paragraph (A) was attached to the passenger car or commercial motor vehicle before the defendant's first court appearance; and

(2) pays an administrative fee not to exceed $10.

You know, 25 years ago when I was stationed in Scotland, that is what we did. The Brits have those large license plates for the blind that couldn't fit in US factory license plate holders. The solution was to use decal versions.

Of course, over there, you get a number and have to go to some auto vendor to have your plates (or decals) made.

Well, I picked up our new Texas plates for our "fun" cars today and hane no intentions of drilling into any of them to install a front plate for the couple of years I'll live in Texas.

I live close to 377 and I'll just keep my fingers crossed that I don't get fined too often...

Did install one on the daily driver :( Even looks bad on that, but better than they look on a Vette or worse yet a Solstice

State law requires that you display two (2) license plates, one to the front and one to the rear. Placement or mounting of license plates is not defined.

*This guidance is referenced in TXDOT's requirements to properly display the registration certificate. DPS does not inspect the license plate itself, but instead inspects the license plate lamp.

First, I do not have a plate on the front of My Camaro, and unless ordered to do so by a court, threatended with contempt, I will not do so... but...there are some innacuracies here... It is a law in Texas that there will be two plates displayed, and they are defined...maybe not to the left front or right front, or high or low... but...
The above quote is listed on the DPS sight, but it is not an accurate reprint...on the website, not by PWND, the poster of this information... In the quote below, is the actual way it is written in the code... There is a little room for interpretation, thank goodness, but it is written that the plates will be displayed "at" the front and rear of the vehicle, not "to" the front and rear. Been down this road a few times... Paid a few fines, and it was pointed out to me... As for the judge someone mentioned that said otherwise, well... good on you, but... there are appeals courts in this land because not all judges interpret things the same...
Believe me, you can't take this thread into court and beg forgiveness due to what you read on the internet...
I support no front plate in Texas, but, be informed, then make an informed decision. I made mine to not display at the front of my Camaro...

wow... good to know... thanks...

not that I would put the front plate on anyway... but it sure would be nice for a clear cut "do & do not" list from these law making people...

has anyone here purchased/attached one of those under the car hide-away plate holders?

thanks again for the heads up...

Glad we don't have the front plate requirement here in Michigan.

Just a thought, but has anyone thought of useing a couple of real strong magnets on the front of the plate and behind the plastic bumper? We often tear apart bad hard drives at work, and get some of the strongest magnets out of the heads. I have a set of magnets that are so strong that they could stick to one another on a 2x4.

Just a thought, slap on the plate then and there

Just to say that On-star is not the best backup. My wifes Tahoe was stolen out of our driveway last Feb, We called and onstar was a waste of time! Also after 48hours they quit looking

Not a problem, and hey....

Thanks a huge bunch for the TGI invite... thats over and above....i'm way up in Kyle but hang with the Sa crowd on Friday nights... Looking forward to meeting you and seeing the Camaro Tx Tx edition

i've looked at the retractable type, just not sure, and I really do not want anything to obstruct the front look...

I was just pulled over in Idaho on Sunday for not having a front plate. KarenSS showed me her retractable and it works slick as snot on a door knob. You just have to be fast with the button. I am not about to put holes in bumper.
