Don't look for a new platform (Alpha I believe) in any Camaro until there is a sixth generation version made. All fifth generation Camaros will remain on the current Zeta platform, Z/28 or not.

Yeah, that would be nice, but if it takes an act of congress just to change/add a paint color, they won't consider all those engine choices. Although the first generation Camaros were highly profitable and had a lot more engine choices then, than they have now.

Yeah it figures there would be something impeding that. But, if possible, definitely seems like it would be the best way for GM to go. Then everyone could get the Z28 they want and GM could make their money. But people will probably be just fine with sticking say a Z28 badge on an SS or something along those lines.

You will NEVER again see the many choices that used to be available many years ago, it's just not going to happen (I think the first gen. Camaro had 12-14 engine options). And I don't think you'll see Chevy just sticking Z/28 badges on an SS and calling it a day, I'm pretty sure we are going to see a different engine, suspension and some other things. The body may be pretty close to the same as it has been over the years, the body itself doesn't really differentiate between an SS and a Z/28, it's what's under the body that does.

No I wasn't saying that GM was going to stick Z28 badges on an SS and calling it a day. I'm saying some SS owners will probably be doing that. I've seen already on the forums of people saying they've seen SS with Z28 badges on it.

Historically that's true, but this generation Z28 should receive a noticeably beefed up body -- wider front and rear fenders, beefier and more aggressive looking front fascia and rear end, etc.

You'll always have a number of those people, I remember back in '69 a fellow with a 307cid (2 barrel low performance engine) Camaro painted the "Z" stripes on it, added Z/28 emblems and tried to pass it off as a Z/28. So that certainly has not changed over the years.

I dunno how much wider it should get. It's already as wide as a Z06...anymore and it'll be hard to park.

It's OK, I'll walk from the far end of the lot.

People can cruise by & drool better out there anyway, and I won't have to break people's fingers for bumping it with their SUV doors.

That platform is designated "Alpha", and will likely underpin the next generation Camaro...not this one.
lol i fat fingered it, TMI. lol i meant GMI, didnt see it posted here. same article none the less. I knew it was gonna be on next gen. but i was hopiing they might be able to adapt it to this body style.

I'll go out on a limb here and say this may just be a 2011 SS Camaro, werent there going to be a few noticeable changes to this upcoming model? Plus with the Mustang's new body update and the 5.0 id say GM is just staying ahead of the curve

So thats my vote, i think its an updated 2011 SS

It costs them just as much to certify and validate (durability, emissions, fuel economy, etc) a combo that will sell 50,000 units as it will for 500 units. So for low volume powertrains, the cost doesn't get spread out nearly as much and adds significant cost. On top of that there is the extra engineering work and supply line complexity. I wouldn't be surprised if it worked out that its cheaper to offer LS9 Z28s exclusively than it would cost for an LSA Camaro if there were also LS7 and LS9 options on top of the LSA.

No, there weren't. A few features and options are expected. But no exterior changes.

Well there wouldn't be complexity if the car was only built when it was ordered as compared to mass producing them. I think it would be a better sales curve because it's a much better customization offer and would attract more people who maybe would like to have a Z28 as like a "collectors edition" but don't want a whole bunch of hp. I don't necessarily see difficulty building when it's ordered. They could even start the ordering process a while before they're going to be released so they can get the initial ordering out of the way and have them hopefully created by the time the reveal date come out. That's just what I think would be better.

Assuming its easy to just build an extra few engines for special orders, there is still the cost of adding extra engines+transmission combinations. People already think that $50,000 is too much for a 550 hp Z28. What you propose could easily result in the exact same car selling for $60,000 or more.
