There are many, MANY factors to consider from an OEM standpoint that makes reducing weight a helluva lot more complex than just.....removing the mufflers, for instance. Weight was a high priority for the team, because it effects everything: Fuel economy, acceleration, handling, cost (indirectly), etc. They DID manage to remove about 150lbs from a comparable G8 (the only other car in NA on a similar platform.)....so to pretend they didn't care about it is kind of silly.

I'd also like to point out that even the M3 weighs 3700lbs, and it's a smaller vehicle using exotic materials.
I could of been in the development meetings.. nah i wasnt..
but GM put out early before car was being sold that the car gained some weight because the car was going to be a 5 star all around on the crash test.. I dont like heavy cars but really not much you can do now a days unless you loaded for a full exotic. They all are heavy. Challenger, Mustang, camaro, GT500, even nissans Z is starting to get up there now.
Probably has to do with the crash test. Crash test have gotten harder to get 5 stars then in the past. More material absordes more of the impact..
I'll bitch and I'll rank but we all know 3000lbs cars arent going to happen in full size sports car unless you ready to pay $80K

Shouldn't we be giving props to Carroll Shelby? I mean, maybe it's just his name these days, but when I hear "Shelby Mustang", I focus more on the first part.

I also don't get all the comparisons, and all the the magazine "titles" given to these automobiles. There will always be one faster, cheaper, more/less expensive, cooler, better looking, etc. (some of those are objective anyway) I call marketing gimmicks to sell magazines!

I give props to Ford whenever they deserve it, and 2011 mustang all around deserves it. From the V6... to 5.0... to the GT500.

Crash-tests...and structural rigidity to refine the ride and handling...sound-deadening materials to shut out road noise...creature-comforts like A/C, a bagillion speakers, 500-way adjustable seats, sensors up the behind and big tires because they look good...it all adds up at the end of the day. But it all adds up favorably, imo. I wouldn't want to give up any of those things.

I think we'll see a reduction in weight in the coming years. And I look forward to the Alpha-platform Camaro rumor coming true....but 3000lbs? You're probably right -- it isn't going to happen. And frankly, I wouldn't want it to...talk about a death-trap. Even the 60s Camaros weren't that light, and you don't want to get into an accident in one of those.

I can be a lil dumb and dont really care or think much about the death thing..
My last car was 2900lbs (i reduce weight a lil), so even when the car had 400HP it flew. it would trap about 118mph. When I got it over 500HP there was a time I trapped 126mph(all stock internals). For Camaro to do a 126mph trap (trap is best way to measure how fast a car is) it take 725HP (maybe like 615wHP)..

I decided to get todays sports car because I need RWD.. I was going to get mustang because it was lighter but ford wasnt working with me. Then I found out I could get a camaro ss under sticker so I figured its a 1000lbs more but the handling isnt bad. it traps 110mph not bad for starting point. I researched LS3 and saw people pushing it over 600wHP stock internals so figured I could make this car handle as good and make it as fast and actually have a shot at traction under 60 (probably not)

now what was the point of me writing all this.. damn I ramble on too much!

structural rigidity.. yea very important.. sound deadening good to a point.. I didnt have a/c in first car but after living in NC then TX for last 8yrs I have come to like it LoL..
I dont care about power seats rather save the weight.. some sensor good some just over the top.. tire pressure sensor u dont need though it doesnt add that much weight im sure..
Id like to see this alpha-platform.. going to have to look it up.. if they can get camaro under 3600lbs that be nice..

Lucky...

I got to follow an Aqua Blue SS to work the other day...it seemed to love the snow, but that's the first one I've seen in over a month. I feel deprived.

My neighbor has a completely blacked out SS.... everything, wheels, taillights, bowties, flat black stripes... very cool.

Favorite though is a white SS, all tinted out, blacked out tails and powder-coated the wheels to a hyper black color.

We all could just save and buy Porsche Cayman S and Boxster S. They are loght, quick, and safe in crash test ratings! And refering to a previous comment up above I thought the new 370Z lost weight over the previous model? That was what made it so special!

I for one think the next gen of Muscle Cars: '14 Mustang / '15 Camaro will be lighter with smaller engines with either forced induction whether it be smaller V8's or even V6's. This could be the last go around for the GT500. The new GT might have a forced induction V8 which leaves no need for a GT500 if it is lighter than the GT now. I just hope the SS and GT don't end up getting V6's with forced induction, just yet, but it may be innevitable!

Can't go wrong with that color. I love bright colors blue, orange, red, etc... nothing flashy! LOL

That sucks I've had a bunch of surgeries not to my knees yet thank god. I race motocross so that is almost inevitable even if your not injured you have to remove scar tissue eventually!

Buddy of mine and I went into a Toyota dealership recently to look at some 4X4's... The manager of the Toyota Dealership drove a Orange GT500 (there is your sign) and it attracted more attention than ANYTHING they had on the lot. I would love a flashy muscle car like that if it didn't mean getting pulled over once a week.
