I've heard 2 different answers from 2 different members of the Camaro team. Both yes and no. I suspect that they don't know that iPods use unique file formats and aren't just MP3 players. I doubt it will work with iPods, because they would have to pay out licensing to Apple. I didn't see "iPod[tm] Compatible" on any of the documentation, but maybe its in the fine print.

YES!
You will have the aux input for all models. You WILL be able to control your IPOD through that jack. The USB port is for a thumb drive or memory stick. I do believe that we will be able to control the IPOD and USB through the scroll buttons, etc. In fact, I'm 99.999999999999999% sure of this. |

Yes, but what about the iPhone? Is there a regular aux jack (minijack or RCA input)?
Gotta keep the speculation train going somehow

Do you guys think a nice portable external hard drive would work for that USB port? If so it'd be endless music for the road and way better than an Ipod

I was hoping for a mini hard drive like the CTS...plug in your usb memory stick...upload all your songs, and keep them in a hard drive. Darn it! Can't do it.
But that's okay...I could fit hundreds of songs on an external memory stick! NO MORE CD'S!!! |

I'm fairly certain there are aftermarket solutions. You could have a hard drive installed somewhere in the car, maybe the glove box. Might not even be too expensive.

For those thinking of getting an external hard drive, make sure it can run off USB power and doesn't require an external power source.

Now using the USB connection would allow ipod control thru the steering wheel/head unit. You would use the same cable that originally came with your ipod. As far as ipod files, proprietary stuff, etc---- the ipod itself converts the proprietary itune "AAC" files in to audio sound. The sound goes out thru both the stereo minijack, as well as thru the proprietary cable hooked to bottom of ipod [the output being usb that we all hookup to our computers for syncing songs]. Using the usb side allows for ipod control-NOT the stereo minijack. You can set itunes to a mp3 setting. All personal cd's would be converted to mp3's when adding to the itunes library. I mistakenly had this originally set to AAC, and had to reconvert the AAC files to mp3 within itunes advance tab. Some songs [mostly newer ones I believe] bought from itunes only allow you to download them as AAC files, which can't be converted into mp3 files [atleast not using itunes software]. I just got a 32 GB USB flash drive and am putting all of the mp3 files on it. I'll leave this connected to the usb port and play tunes like that--so I dont have to mess with ipod. The few AAC files I couldn't convert are useless on the flashdrive, since the radio head unit supposedly doesn't play AAC files. |
