The skip shift is such a non-issue for me.
After 3200 miles in six weeks, I've seen the message flash up on the DIC twice. Both times I just gave it a bit more acceleration and the message disappeared... then I shifted into 2nd.

CAGS started when GM started putting the 6-speed manual in the Corvette and F-bodys... so probably 93... I think all the manual V8 4th gens were 6 speed manual. There is actually a 3rd gen 6 speed concept car for testing the drive train!

I am on the other end of the spectrum... I absolutly HATE CAGS. I have eliminated it on all my cars (C5, C6, 2010) becasue it is a PITA. I love in a small town and I hate when when you start off from a light slow and go to shift to 2nd and you are forced into 4th and lug the engine. STUPID! And "always be over 21 MPH or 35 RPM" isnt always an option.

Yeah it's friggin annoying. I usually just end up holding first for a few extra seconds so I can shift to 2nd. Can't wait to get it turned off.

Best $14 I ever spent. Without it you will still hit that damn situation in traffic when you least expect it.

That would be a pretty cool car to see come across the auction block.

94. That year GM changed the rear end ratio on the 6speed from 3:23 to 3:42. They also made changed the ratios on the T56 tranny. So to avoid the Gas Guzzler tax they added Cags.

Send a message via AIM to Mr. Wyndham
CAGS never interrupted me, because I wanted to shift that way, anyways.

Also...all you need to do is shift a bit early, or apply more throttle. The skip-shift eliminator is neat, but not worth the money and time to install when I could easily push my foot down a little more.

With all the converts from other performance segments the new Camaro is attracting, I thought I'd try to explain what is going on and how to fix it as simply as possible.

CAGS, or Computer-Aided Gear Selection, is a feature on newer domestic performance vehicles equipped with a six speed manual transmission. The stated purpose of CAGS is to improve fuel economy under “normal” driving conditions and is activated when:

● the transmission is in 1st gear
● you are applying 35% throttle or less
● the vehicle is traveling between 15 and 21 mph
● engine coolant temperature is greater than 171 F (77 C)

When these parameters are met, CAGS overrides the driver and locks out 2nd and 3rd gear, forcing the driver to shift directly from 1st to 4th gear. Most serious drivers are unwilling to accept this factory installed nuisance and eliminating it is priority number one. There is a crude do-it-yourself fix, but the safest way to eliminate CAGS is by installing a Skip Shift Eliminator.

A quality Skip Shift Eliminator uses OEM weather-proof plugs and is installed by simply lifting your vehicle, unplugging the CAGS wiring harness from its solenoid (the solenoid is located on the drivers side towards the top of the transmission), and plugging the Skip Shift Eliminator inline between the harness and solenoid. These units trick the CAGS into thinking it's still in control but will not allow it to activate and will not trigger trouble codes or the “Service” light on your dash board.
Let me guess...Apex Motorsports sells one.

Installed mine last week.

My chevy dealer has these in-stock in parts, though I ordered mine prior to them doing that.
