possible tranny problem, shifter maybe?

i drove to work today fine, no problems. when i left work today something in my drivetrain was way off. every gear had a rough vibration felt in the shifter, it even sounded like some grinding. i had to shift from 1st to 3rd to 5th, all the bottom gears were real rough. average speed was 35-40. i have a hurst shifter installed, probably put like 500 miles since then with no problems. tight clean install. when i was a block away from my house, i put the car in reverse and drove it 20feet, went to 1st gear and a thump, and then no grinding in any gears. has this ever happened to anybody?
also if and when i bring my car to the dealer to have them check this, should i take my diablo tune out? my hurst shifter shouldn't kill my warranty right?
thanks for reading and thanks if you respond...

So I guess I'm the only person this has ever happened too. As an update, I drove to work fine today, no grinding, no noises, in and out of gear smoothly. It was about 40 deg last nite, last time I drove and it was really cold it was riding funny in the front. Somebody please give me some feedback on this, I'm goin crazy with this.

its not the shifter. It is pretty well known these tranny's have a lot of gear noise and can vary from car to car as to their functionality .

I had an issue with mine as well. Different, but possibly related. I installed a Hurst shifter probably 4 months ago. Clean install, no issues, no missing parts or anything, everything went just fine. I've put probably 5-6K miles on since the install, not one problem. Then a few weeks ago I go to my car at the end of the day, I get in and I go to start the car. I normally grab the shifter and pull it towards the driver's side just to make sure it's in neutral before letting out the clutch when letting the car warm up. This time when I did it, it was really hard to pull. When I had parked the car a few hours before, there was no problem at all. I thought it was weird but started the car anyway. I don't remember why, but for some reason I put it in second gear (while still in the parking spot not moving) and it would NOT go in. I let out the clutch, tried again, nothin. Every single other gear works fine, but not 2nd. I decide to drive it out of the parking garage and see if it goes in while moving, still nothin. I finally managed to get it into 2nd, but it's not easy.

The other thing I noticed is when I put it in 2nd gear the shifter is very tight and doesn't move left or right at all like it does in the other gears, it also makes a lot of noise when in 2nd. So after driving around like this for a few days, the problem seemed to go away, then it came back briefly one time when I tried going into 2nd, but I just jammed it in anyway cuz now I was pissed for having to deal with it. Since then I haven't had a problem. It shifts fine, doesn't make noise, and hasn't acted up.

If you take your car in you probably don't need to take the tune off, but it definitely couldn't hurt. Just know that any issue with your tranny like this they will blame on you shifter no matter what. Good luck!!

-Mike

If you take it in and the problem isn't obvious to the mechanic, they'll probably blame it on the shifter. If this continues, you might think about putting the stock shifter back in and take it in for warranty repair.

I wouldn't think the tuning would be an issue with the manual transmission.

knock on wood, and thank god it only happen the one time. i don't think its the shifter at all. it felt like something on the drive shaft, as i was driving down the road it felt like it was rubbing something. but like i said, i got home, backed it up 20 feet, made a weird low noise and it's been cool. so stand by to stand by i suppose...
and thanks for your replies

Below is post in another thread, might be the wrong thread to have put it in. My shifter is hard as freaking 10 year old fruit cakes when the engine is on, and I try to put it in gear....actuallyif I dont' force it or rev over 4k it wont go in gear. Downshifting is only smooth when I double clutch. Putting it in reverse takes about 1 min max. Start ups from stop are ridiculous cuz from neutral I rev hgh to put it in gear, and I get looks like I am trying to race. I think my local dealership might be trying some funny business. It is v6, but regardless it is manual. More infor in the post below:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Got under 12000 miles on Cam. Shifter won't get in gear unless engine reved high. First time at dealershipt guy I spoke to said it was transmission. But the transmission guy was not there to look at it. Second time around he said that the transmission guy says it is the clutch...that I have been riding the clutch...granted I put the car in neutral at every red light....and replacing the clutch with parts and labor is 2300. Any advice?

dealership told you it was the clutch too? If many people have clutch complaints should people just shift to non chevy clutch?

Sounds like your skip shift solenoid may have caused your 2nd gear shifting problems. Something to look at if happens again.

Negative! V6 dont have Skip Shift! only the v8. it was made so it got more MPG. But the v6 gets enough MPG's.

they are going to replace your tranny or rebuild it ( mine )
